My dell laptop makes cracking sounds

Hi

I just recently purchsed a Dell Inspiron 1545 from a friend.

It works fine

Well last night I was playing around with the volume controls and now I get a cracking noise

when I click with the mouse......I apparently did something when I was playing around with the

volume and sound controls.....I went back and checked everything but don't know what to do

at this point. Any ideas?

Thank you

Hi  Hietak

Welcome to Dell Community

It seems that accidently you made some changes to the volume control settings.

Kindly try to run the fixit from the link below:

http://bit.ly/JvQScU

All the volume control settings shall reset to defaults with the same.

Kindly revert with the findings. Glad to Help

There might be other ways, but the only way I know is to reinstall the audio driver which is pretty simple to do. Go to Device Manager and find the IDT audio driver. Right click on it and select the option to uninstall. If asked if you want to delete the files (not sure of the exact wording) select "no". Re-start the computer and Windows will re-build the driver from the files and the defaults will be restored.

I cannot think of anything you might have done to the volume controls that would cause crackling. If you changed some of the power management settings from full power to a power saving scheme it could have affected audio. These settings are in various places. I think there is one under Control Panel>IDT. Windows has one and probably the video driver has one.

There is a known problem with a Microsoft update that causes audio noise specifically in the 1545. The solution is discussed on page 3 of the thread

Stuttering/Buzzing Sound During Audio/Video Playback

The solution is to downloaded and install the most recent version of Intel Rapid Storage Technology to replace the bad update that came out last summer. However you would not have caused that issue with the volume control so chances are it does not apply to you.

Edit: oops, I thought I was replying to the person who started this thread and had made some changes to the volume control. Instead I quoted "celavey" who posted in this thread for an unknown reason.

Dell Inspiron n3010 Battery as a replacement battery for your Dell laptop. The Inspiron N3010 battery meet or exceed the original Inspiron N3010 notebook/PC batteries. Buy this rechargeable Li-ion Dell Inspiron n3010 battery pack is cost-effective now.

Okay, but did you try the Intel Rapid Share Technology that I suggested? There is a problem of noise on the Inspiron 1545 & 1750 models that was caused by an optional (non-critical) Microsoft update in June 2011 of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager utility. The update was either corrupted or poorly written. The main solution is to download & install the most recent version of Intel Rapid Storage Technology.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=20624&ProductFamily=Chipsets&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Rapid+Storage+Technology&lang=eng

There are two versions there. They are the same except that the 1st  is English and the 2nd is multi-language.

==================================

There are some other solutions that also fix the bad update:

> Go to Device Manager, find the Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller, right click, select Properties, driver tab, roll back driver. Roll back to an earlier version of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager, 8.9.0.1023

> Go  to Windows Services and disable Intel Matrix Storage Event Monitor. Or just set it to "manual" start up.

> Or just uninstall the Intel Matrix Storage Manager.

If doing any of those things does not solve your symptom then the bad update was not the cause of it.
