Loose screen

Hi,  I wonder if anyone can tell me how to fix a loose screen on an Inspiron 5000.  I can only see two screws on the hinges and these are tight,  but it still flaps around like a barn door in the wind !!  Is it something an OK techie person like me can fix or does it need to see the doctor !

Rgds

Define loose.  Do you mean that it goes from all the way open to all the way closed with no resistance, or do you mean that when you have it open, it moves back and forth about 2 inches, before you feel the resistance?

My cpx had the 2 in back and forth problem.  Under the service contract, a tech came out, took apart the whole computer, including disassembling the screen, to replace both hinges.  Now, it's nice and snug, just like new.

Not for the faint of heart, but if you got the guts, just be real careful.

I have a Latitude.  I down loaded the sevice manual from the Dell site.  It does not address this issue only tell you how to disassemble your Laptop.  It has okay detail.  After disassembling.  I discovered my hinge on the right side had popped loose,  I was able to squeeze the hinge arm back on to the hinge body, however I believe in some cases this may need to be replaced in which case you would probably have to find this hinge part for your laptop.  I wrote a more detailed account earlier but after hitting the submit post I could not go back nor find my post.  It might show up later.  *caution the plastic face plate is easy to break*

My screen will go from closed to all the way open with little resistance.  I Took everything apart and and made sure all the screws were tight.  They were.  Do you have any suggestions?

I had the 3 year service contract on 2 different latitudes, and they both had that same problem.  The tech that came out did not talk about why it does it, but it does.  You need to replace both hindges.  The resistance is internal on  them, and not worth mucking up when you have to take the unit completely apart to fix it.

Side note to everyone else...I was also having keyboard issues with the number 8, and I believe the I, L, and period.  If you look on your keyboard, you will see it is a diagonal string.  This tech told me that there was basically a silent recall on keyboards with this problem.  When I called, and said that my number 8 was sporadic, the tech did not blink.  He sent a new one.

So, if your computer is more than a couple of years old, and you are noticing  a little strange behavior from your keyboard, replace it with a new one.....not an ebay special.  Make sure it is NEW and CURRENT.

Another note:  If you are working on a CPi series, (and maybe others) and you have to tear the whole thing apart for some reason, replace the video cable as well.  This cable is notorious for losing the veritical signal to the screen.
