Keyboard button popped off

How do I reattach a button on my XPS M140 keyboard???

Thanks for the reply.....I need a little more info as this is the first time I've dealt with a keyboard button.  There is a little green rubber piece that goes on the keyboard and the button goes on top of it.  I've tried to slide button on sideways at 45 degree angle and snap in as it appears there are two small edges on left and right side of keyboard, but just noticed after reading your reply that the bottom of the button cover opens when pulled.

On a scissor-switch membrane keyboard, try sliding the keycap into the scissor switch structure at one end and snap into it at the other.  The underside of the keycap will show you which way to slide and snap.

Is there a scissors-like plastic structure around the rubber dome?

May help if you can post an image of the keycap and construction of the key

The same thing has happened on my Dell XPS M1710. The backspace key has completely fallen off. I have tried inserting the two thin metal hinges attached to the key into the tiny holes on the keyboard, from the front, and snapping the key forward to attach it, but no such luck. I think I do have what you call a membrane keyboard, because it has a rubber nozzle surrounded by a clear grey/yellow cover, which can be moved up when you instert a pointy object into its cavity. The thing is, when I snap the key into place as I described above, it stays there, but it feels wobbly and eventually falls off again, sometimes getting stuck under the |\ button under it, making it difficult to get out and have another go. Is there a special technique? Am I suppsed to insert the metal hinges into the holes at all?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And yes, I will post up some pictures as soon as possible. Thanks.

A replacement keyboard is between $15 and $30. I just ordered one from Dell for another model and it was $14.99 plus about $5 shipping.

Here is the keyboard for your laptop from Dell, it is $11.00  LINK < ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>
