Intermittent Power Supply

I've got a Dell Inspiron 8500 and the computer senses being on AC power intermittently.  Sometimes when I jiggle the AC adapter cord, the computer will begin sensing the power again.  I tried a different AC adapter to see if the problem was with the adapter itself, but it's with the computer.  Now, it rarely picks up the power from the AC adapter.  Is there a part I can replace myself?  How?

Thanks

James

Need to replace the motherboard for this, as you have already confirmed that the problem is not with Adapter. If you are under warranty, then contact tech support at 1-800-624-9896 or www.support.dell.com/chat

If you are not under warranty, then contact the OWR (Out of Warranty Repair) dept at 1-800-288-4410   Monday – Saturday 8:00 am – 6:00 pm Central Time.

Any chance it's the ac plug receptacle?  Because if I move it around a little, I sometimes get lucky and get a good connection.

You yourself said that another AC Adapter has already been tried with no success. Try using an AC Adapter once again to be sure.

The AC adapter is fine.  I'm talking about the power supply plug on the computer.

Thanks

If the problem is with the motherboard, how can I fix this if the laptop is no longer under warranty?  Can I purchase the parts from dell?

You can purchase the plug itself from radio shack. its a $2.99 part if you are comfortable with board soldering.

Thanks for the tip.  I'm quite comfortable with soldering.  If anyone has any part specs, etc.  I'll run to radio shack today.

I have an Inspiron 1000, nothing fancy, and the intermittent power problem is exactly as dicussed in here.  OW service will charge me between $250-380 for a package deal to fix motherboard and also recondition it.  Is there also a 2.99 Radioshack solution to this?
