How does the i8600 handle games?

I was wondering how the i8600 handles games?

I figure since it has a 9600 pro that it would handle most games no problem, but I hear some people say otherwise.  Another concern I have about getting an i8600 is how loud, and how hot it gets during use, especially during games.

Thanks,

-Shun

Well is the fan loud to the point where it is annoying, and you no longer want to play the game just to prevent the noise? ... This was the case on my old Dimension desktop.

I read somewhere on this board that dell might be releasing new "Dothan" i8600 systems soon.  Should I wait for those to come out instead of buying an i8600 now?

I would be buying this computer to bring with me to college this fall.

So far i've played:

Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament 2003
Counter-Strike
Quake 3 Arena

8600 handles awsome, high frame rates (don't know the exact numbers..)

I haven't experienced any major heat problem, but the fan does turn on after a bit of gameplay, but it isn't really _that_ loud

The noise is noticeable when playing games, but then it's not annoying because games always have music or at least sound (but you won't be able to play a game in classroom for example, it's really audible). During normal ofice work, it is almost quiet.

the noise is no where near the point where i would want to stop. it's noticable, not overpowering.

The Fan is not extremely noticable during game play, I have the Nvidia 128 5650FxGo in my 8600 which is a little less powerful than the 9600 and I have no problems in graphic intensive games, right now I am playing Far Cry with no  problems at all with Medium settings at 1028 x 768 ,I think the 8600 is a wonderful laptop for games and would not trade mine in for the world.........

( Games Played: Far Cry, Max Payne 2, Halo, Star Trek Ellite Force 2, Alien vs Preditor 2, Jedi Academy, Soldier of Fortune 2 Double Helix, BlackHawk Down, LOTR Return of the King, Medieval Total War, The Thing, Star Wars Jedi Outcast, Call of Duty, Allied Assault, )

Specs 8600 1.7, 128Nvidia 5650FxGo, 768Mb 333DDR, 60Gig Hd, 15.4 WSXGA+, 1300 Wireless, 4xDVDR+RW(Owned since Mid November 2003 ZERO Problems or Dead Pixels ,Zero Crashes, an amazing Laptop.......

Well...I wouldn't put much stock in those articles until Dell makes an official announcement...

Since the fastest Banias is 1.7GHz.....The Dothian will start at 1.7 or higher...and the prices will be on the high end too...

But either way you won't be dissappointed in the performance...

I have played these same games on my 600m...at high resolutions too...

I have also played Star Trek Elite Force, Simpsons Hit & Run, Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow...so the 8600 should be fine...

The fan is quite audible. However, turning up the volume a bit louder will resolve this issue. When I play games, I don't even really notice the fans being on. Also, beaware that everything gets quite warm so make sure that it has adequete cooling.

The 8600 shouldn't have any problems at all playing any current game.

The fan is indeed lous while gaming.

My 8600 played all current games well until I started FarCry. This game only runs smooth on the 8600 (with nvidia 5650) with all setting to low which is really to bad as all eye candy is turned off. But as tomshardware said that this game requires a top notch video card I assume this is normal.

Older games (KOTOR, splintercell, Unreal 2, ...) play just fine

Yes, FarCry is hard for the FX5650go. I play it at 1280x800, all settings medium except lighting on low and maybe textures and environment on high depending on the situation.
goddim, maybe try leaving lighting at low and setting others to medium. It improves video quality very much.

I've seen it on a i8600 with 9600PT, there it runs better, so the actual 8600 with the 9600PT is still good for modern games. You have to keep in mind that the Inspiron 8600 is still one of the fastest Pentium M notebooks. I consider the Geforce FX5700go as roughly equivalent to the 9600PT, and the only faster mobile GPU is the Mobility Radeon 9700, which is about 20% faster than the 9600PT. If noise bothers you, then the only choice is a Pentium-M.

Do notebooks with the Pentium M (like the 8600) always run the chip at full speed?

Notebooks with the Pentium 4 Mobility processor will reduce the chip speed under certain conditions such as low processing load, hot temperatures, or when running with batteries.  I'm wondering if this is also done with the Pentium  M.

Chips like the Pentium M will clock down when not under high load - i believe it has 6 possible states, but im not sure. It would probably clock down under high temp too, but they rarely get hot enough to do that. It only downclocks on battery when I force it to.

Unlike the P4 based chips though, it IS easier to control the chips speed with things like i8kfangue and SpeedSwitchXP.
