Dual Monitor Set-up

I have an XPS laptop (model M140) and am interested in adding a monitor in order to be able to view two different applications at the same time, one on the laptop monitor and the other on the additional monitor.  How can I tell whether the laptop can accommodate this function??

If you laptop has a video out port then you should have no problem setting it up how you want. Simply plug in the external monitor then go to your graphics settings and select extended desktop mode. A lot of laptops have have a function button on the keyboard which allows you to easily switch between display modes. If all goes well the external monitor should turn on showing your desktop background, you can then drag your apps over onto that window.

With my XpsM1730 i have found that it wont let me run SLI and have duel screens at the same time.

Does everyone have this problem or do i just have my graphics card configuration setup wrong?

You could make use of your SLI power to run dual screens if they are hooked up via a DualHead2Go.
