Dell Vostro recovery partition boot not working

Hi everyone,

I have a Vostro 3550 and want to boot the winRE.wim on the recovery partition to reset the laptop to factory state. If I hit F8 during windows start and then select "Repair computer" in then boot menu, the "Windows is loading files" screen and the progress bar from PE are shown, but if the bar reached 100% the computer stops booting and nothing more as a black screen is seen. I noticed that after such a boot attempt the filesystem on the harddisk is damaged and I must run chkdsk to repair. Then I switched the BCD of Windows 7 to the winRE.wim from Windows 7 on the system drive and this image is booting without any problems, but here I can not reset computer to factory state, because the Dell software is missing in this image...

Can anybody help with some hints?

Hi tmmafmap

Welcome to the Community. If the recovery partition is not damaged while reinstalling the OS, then you can do a Factory Restore using the Windows Disc. Use the below link for help. If this fails, then I am afraid the recovery partiton is damaged, thenI suggest you will need to manually reinstall the OS.

Hope this helps.

thank you Mohammed for the quick response, but this is the problem: After typing F8 and then selction of "Repair computer" the Dell factory image WinPE from winRE.wim stored in teh recovery partition is starting to boot, but stops booting after the progress bar "Windows is loading files" reached 100%. If I boot the original Window 7 recovery system winRe.wim stored on the C: partition everything boots ok, but the option "Dell File and System restore" is missing, due to not available in the Microsoft original recovery console. Generally I have problems booting WinPE-based recovery systems on this computer. I tried also some backup recovery media, like Macrium Reflect etc. Same Problem. Only the Microsoft original PE-system is booting without any problems. I hope anyone have same problems already solved. Maybe a driver problem with WinPE...

Hi,

I don't think the partition is damaged, because yesterday I extracted the winRE.wim from the recovery partition, copied this file to a Vostro 3560 and booted it. No problem, WinPE starts normal and the Dell tools are available. There seems to be a problem with booting WinPE on this Vostro 3550...

Hi tmmafmap,

Thanks for the information.

In the Dell boot configuration file.

1. The Boot Manager which seems to boot from the Recovery Partition

2. A Boot Loader config that boots the Windows 7 OS

3. A Boot Loader config that boots the Windows Preinstallation Environment

4. A Boot Loader config that boots the ramdisk partition

5. Other configs

6. The Device Option config which identifies the \Recovery\WindowsRE\boot.sdi location, etc

I have found another method of restoring the Dell factory image back to the laptop, without having to use the Windows 7 DVD, which is not included and most OEMs do not provide them by default anymore.

Here is how: Your recovery partition must be available. If you deleted your recovery partition, your out of luck

1. Create a bootable winpe with imagex disk using Windows Vista AIK

2. Boot your laptop from the disk

3. Format your OS drive

4. Use imagex to apply the Dell factory image located x:\dell\image\factory.wim

Also please try using this link http://dell.to/1n0t9Vp to create a WinPE Bootable disk.

Reply us back with result.

Hi,

and this is the problem with this Vostro 3550: I can not boot any Windows PE system other than the Windows 7 installation dvd or the Windows 7 recovery console on C:\. The boot stops on the the screen "Windows is loading files" at 100% progress. That's it...

Hi tmmafmap,

You could run a hardware test on the laptop to check for hardware issues.Kindly find the steps below to perform the H/W diagnostics.

Turn the computer off >restart the computer

At the Dell logo screen, start tapping the F12 key a few times until you see the ‘One Time Boot Menu’ appear.

At the one time boot menu, press the down arrow key to highlight ‘Diagnostic’ and then press Enter to begin the PSA diagnostics. If the test fails, please make a note of any error codes listed. You can also refer to the link below.
