Hi gdreeta,

Please share the exact system model as there are various variants available under Dell XPS 15 series. Try releasing the residual charge from the system, here are the steps:

  • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer including the battery and AC Adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter. Try to restart the computer and check.

Also, update the BIOS of the system. Here are the steps:

  • Click on the link: http://dell.to/15qqGcr
  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
  • You will find the BIOS under 'BIOS' tab.
  • Download and install the updated version following the onscreen instructions.

Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

Try using an alternate good known battery to check if the battery is faulty or not. Similarly, check with an alternate AC Adapter to check its functionality as well.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi gdreeta,

Thank you for sharing the information.

Please boot the system to BIOS by tapping F2 key on the startup. Check AC Adapter type under Main Tab and share its status. Also, right click on the battery charging icon and click on Battery Health Meter and click on Battery Health tab. Check battery health status from there. Try using a good known alternate AC Adapter (if available) to check functionality.

Reply with the results, will take it further from there.

To anyone who has tried these above steps, you may also want to try this:

REMOVE THE CMOS BATTERY

I've done a BIOS reset a number of times, and it never solved this problem. For some reason, when I removed the CMOS and put it back, it began working properly. The CMOS battery is easily accessible close to the fan, the easiest way is to remove the plug into the motherboard (it is twisted black./grey). Your BIOS settings will be reset, but it's a small price to pay.

I've spent more than $150 trying to buy equipment to solve this problem - Hopefully anyone experiencing this reads it before that happens to them as well.

One quick note - IF YOU USE A DIFFERENT ADAPTER, your battery light shouldn't be flashing red - it simply will not be on unless the laptop is on.

In my case (when my BIOS was malfunctioning), it was FLASHING RED and white - that may help in figuring out if you are having the same problem as I did.

Having the same problem here; unable to update BIOS as the Dell XPS 15 laptop states 'the battery must be above 10%'.

This is a shame; bought this laptop in October 2013, have used it maybe 30 times, always well maintained. Dell should be replacing these batteries - clearly a defect.

It may or may not be the battery - check the system setup (F2 at powerup).  If the AC adapter shows "unknown", the battery won't charge.  If that's the case, first replace the adapter with a new OEM Dell unit.

If that doesn't solve it, replace the DC jack inside the system.

If that doesn't get the adapter recognized, replace the mainboard.
