Charging Laptop Troubles -- What Part to Replace?

My name is Devin Fitzpatrick, and I'm a freshman in college, and don't know that much about computers, especially not hardware -- but the resident computer consultants told me this forum is really helpful so I'm hoping you guys can give me a little advice. I'm afraid I don't actually have a Dell Inspiron -- I have a Latitutde laptop, an older make -- but since this isn't really a software problem, I don't think it should matter that much, and I didn't know what other forum I should go to. I hope this is okay. It shouldn't be too much trouble; I know something's busted beyond repair, but I just need to find out which part to replace, and see if anyone else has ever suffered the same problem. Because it's pretty crazy.

At some random point yesterday, my laptop started running out of battery. This began to seem pretty strange once I realized it was still plugged into the wall -- then I realized that the light was off on the AC adapter (that black box on the power cord, in case I have the term wrong), so I tried different sockets, and none worked, even ones that had been working on desk laps and radios. So I assumed my power cord had just burned out, and took it into a shop. But when the guy plugged it in, it lit up fine. And then he plugged it into a laptop that the cord would fit into, and THAT worked fine. So I was like "Huh!" And went back to my dorm, feeling silly.

Only it didn't work when I got back. Then, having a creative idea, I tried plugged the power cord into the wall and NOT plugging it into the laptop. The green light turned on. And then I plugged it into the laptop -- and the AC adapter light went OFF. And then I removed the power cord -- and the light STAYED off. Even though it was still plugged into the wall.

Yeah...

When I remove the plug from the wall and plug it back in again, the light turns on again, of course, but every time I plug it into the laptop the AC adapter light turns off. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen. The only possible logical explanation seems to be that it's my laptop's power input thingie that's burned out, and it's so freaking burned out that it actually reverses the eletrical current or something and makes it so the AC adapter is cancelled out completely, and thus the green light stays off even after I remove the cord from my laptop, and I'm forced to unplug it from the wall and replug it to turn the light back on again.

So my question is: what part on my laptop, specifically, is burned out? I can handle being without my laptop for the time it'll take for a part to ship, but I think if I order the wrong part and mess up things will start to get bad for me, what with having to write essays and stuff. So if you wonderful people at the Dell forum can help me with some hardware knowledge and tell me what part specifically should be the one that's randomly died on me, I'd really, really appreciate it.

Hope you all had a good Labor Day weekend! Peace!

Take the battery out and see if the AC adapter light stays on when it is connected to the notebook. If it does then the battery is probably bad or it could be the charging circuit in the notebook. But the charging circuit is also the power circuit that supplies power to the notebook whether or not there is a battery installed. If the light still goes out you will probably need a new motheerboard as the the charging ciruit is part of the mothrboard and can't be replaced by itself, depending on what model Latitude you have.

Always give the system specs when posting. Model, CPU, speed of CPU, amount of memory installed and so on.

Thank you very much for your reply. I'm sorry I wasn't more specific, but I don't really know many of my system specs, and, of course, I can't check on my computer, because it doesn't work. I got this laptop about two years ago or so. But on the bottom, it does say:

"Model No: PP01L
Input: 20V --- 3.5A
Latitude C600"

I think it has about 10 gigabytes of space and 800megahertz processor, but that's all I know.

I took the battery out and the AC adapter light still dies. So it must be this 'charging curcuit'.

Some new questions, then, if you can help me: Can the motherboard/charging curcuit be replaced on a C600? How much does a motherboard cost? Can I save my hard drive? And is 2 years the normal lifespan of a motherboard? It was just sitting on my table...

Admittedly, though, I have no surge protector. I can't remember anything else being damaged electrically, even in the same socket, but it's a possibility there was just some random surge...

I just want to try bumping this thread again, in case anyone who knows the answer to the short questions in the above post missed this. If there's no reply again, I'll just try and order whatever part I think I need -- though to be honest I'm really not sure.

I'd like to avoid getting a new motherboard, if possible, so if anyone knows if it's necessary...

Thank you very much.

Hi there,

Have you tried another adaptor? If it shows the same thing then replace the whole motherboard. Probably the easiest solution. Motherboards can be a couple of hundred dollars. I would advice searching around before going to Dell as they can cost a fortune.

Yeah, I'm afraid I don't think it is the adapter that's not working, because the man at the shop plugged it into one of his laptops and it apparently was charging the laptop fine. If it wasn't, he no doubt would've tried to sell me a new one. ;)

Would any company's motherboard be compatible with a Dell? Cheaper is nicer, but really I just want one that works -- should I open up my computer and find out what kind of motherboard I have, and then just replace it?

Actually... ARE there different kinds of motherboards? I'm a bit out of my league, I'm afraid.

Thank you very much for your assistance! It's really appreciated.

Actually u need to check the part number on your board with any new one u decide to order to make sure it is compatible with your old processor. So i would recommand removing your old one and getting the part number off it and contactcing supply companies first. Unless you decide to purchase a board with a pre-fitted processor.

Hi Devin,

Yes you need to replace the motherboard with a similar Dell Part (all motherboards for dell machines are from dell and no other manufacturer makes them, to my knowledge). What is important as money concernes is where you purchase the part from. More expensive but the most reliable source would be Dell. You said you had a C600 (latitude) right? Well u can do a search on ebay for Dell latitude C600, i see there are a couple of motherboards on there for $100 or so. I think the C600 is simular to the Inspiron 4000/4100 if i'm not mistaken. You can also try www.parts-people.com and look for C600 motherboards, on there for $169. As long as the motherboard is compatible with the C600 model then the part number should not really matter. Glad i could help, keep us posted to see how its going.
