CPU Usage too high!
My CPU usage is keeps topping out at 100% and will stay there for a while.
I am told this is not good.
I deleted all of my unused programs, and nothing uneccesary is running in the background.
Anyone have any solutions?

Nope I am running XP and I have a inspirion 6000.
When I called Dell Tech for another problem I had he checked in the Task Manager and saw that it was topping at 100% and he said it that wasnt good. But in order to tell me more I had to pay.

Ok, i get the same thing but clicking on the performance tab, the actual CPU usage is idling, low at 5% or less when everything is closed. How about yours, if you shut every open window down?

System Idle Process has the highest, it hovers in the 80s.
The second highest is firefox in the 20s.

Hey Johnny,
Your "system idle process" is hovering at 80% and firefox at 20%?
Erm... I may be called an idiot, but it seems to me that your cpu load is only 20%, the system idle process means it is 'idle', doing nothing at all... My system idle process at this moment, when I am typing this message is at 99%...
Just to be sure, scan your computer for virusses and mallware. But as I look at your posts, it seems your system runs fine... If you look at the tab "performance" of the task manager, and the "CPU Usage" is at 100%, then you should start to worry about cpu usage. It is known that cpu usage can go up to a 100% if you boot up, this is caused by Windows and it's update process (automatic updates), try switching this offand see what happens during bootup.
Cheers

Jonny, have a look at this: http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2704162&SiteID=2
Also have you tried closing/ending the process for Windows Onecare MsMpEng.exe?

I dont have a scan going, I do them manually so there is none to be scheduled.
Would it help if i gave you all the info from the peformance tab? kernals etc?

Hi Johnny,
If I look at the image, your usage is not at 100% but at 55%.
Strange is that system idle is at 85%... (which in fact is pretty good for a laptop...)
Please check your system for virusses and mallware. I gues that will help solving it.

When I shut down my browser and have no programs running (except internet security) these are the top four...
system idle
system
wuaucit.exe
MsMpEng.ext

According to a google search:
wuaucit.exe is auto windows update
system idle is just a process that the system runs when nothing is using up the rest of the CPU bandwidth
system ?
MsMpEng.ext this is Windows OneCare, which is your antivirus/antispyware package
Which leads me to believe your system is running some sort of scan? Can you check that there is not one scheduled? Also end this process and see if the CPU usage drops.
