Backlight Keyboard no longer works. Studio XPS 1645
I noticed last week that the back light option on my keyboard no longer functions.
I know the Fn key works on the keyboard as I can perform other Fn+ tasks and I know that the right arrow key (which is the same combo key that controls back-lighting) also functions on it's own.
Aside from normal Windows 7 updates, the only changes to my laptop recently has been flashing to the A07 bios and the new power supply mailed out by Dell.
Am I missing a software option somewhere that defaults my back-lighting to off? Or is it a mistake (or intention) of the A07 bios to disable this feature given the recent power supply throttle issues with this model laptop.
Any suggestions/help would be appreciated!

I'm at BIOS A07 with the new PSU and the backlight works fine; no change.

Hmm, well if it's not the bios... anyone have any other ideas?
I tried Technical Support and could not resolve the issue.

gmping,
Try going to Drivers & Downloads, enter your service tag number. Under applications, download and install Dell QuickSet. If it got uninstalled of somehow got corrupt, it stops those functions.

Thank you Rick for the suggestion. It partially solved my problem.
I downloaded the quickset drivers, uninstalled the current quickset, and fresh installed the current quickset drivers with reboots between each step.
On the positive side, I was able to get my touchpad backlight buttons back. However, the keyboard light is still unresponsive.
I went into the Windows Mobility Center and checked my keyboard backlighting settings and they I have backlighting, bright, and never off, options all selected.
Anyone else have a "bright" idea for my lighting problem? :emotion-1:

I have the same computer (1645) and have the same problem with the backlit keyboard. I tried all the suggestions above without success.

Hit the following buttons simultaneously as many times you need to:
"Fn" + "Right arrow key"

I have exactly the same problem with my XPS 1645 keyboard backlight.
I also tried everything to fix this issue :
- Fn + right arrow key
- Reinstalling Dell Quickset (which at least succeeded at switching on my trackpad light)
- Switching parameters in the Windows mobility center
If anyone finds a solution, I'm very interested.
Thank you for your help ;)

This worked for Dell 1645. Thanks for the post. I am disappointed that the Dell Documentation does not have this turn-on/off key sequence easily & prominently displayed. I wasted a lot of time looking for this key and thanks to you I find the answer on a non- Dell web page.

I have the answer...
Click on your battery icon
Click on Windows Mobility Center
Adjust the Keyboard Brightness to a higher level
and your keyboard will be backlit again...

Also have exactly the same problem, mousepad lights up and dims/brightens with fn+right arrow, but actual keys don't light up at all. It definitely used to work, could this be a hardware problem with Studio XPS 164's?

When you say battery key, do you mean F3?
I'm going out of my mind with this issue. I teach classes in a dark room and absolutely need the keyboard backlight: That was a major reason I bought this machine.
I tried all of the proposed solutions and find that mine will come on for a few seconds and then go off. Could this be short?
The machine is exactly two years old and it worked fine until today. It never failed.
Another weird thing I noticed is that previously, when I hit the up and down arrows all that used to control was the keyboard brightness. Now it moves the cursor up and down, even when I'm in a browser.
Could some setting have changed that is causing this?

Has anyone resolved this issue. My keyboard back light stopped working in the last hour. Ive been trying everything here but no joy. If i knew the location of the connection for the backlight i would open up the back and see if I can identify the problem.
