BSOD after ejecting disc???

So, I've been having issues with a game I just bought. Whenever I quit and eject the disc (after making sure it wasn't still running of course) I get a stop error. I've posted on a forum specifically for this game (The Sims 2 Apartment Life, fyi), thinking it was a game conflict, but they told me this was a computer problem and locked the thread ><  So now I came here...

At first, the game would crash after qutting with an "application has crashed..." message, even though it always ran perfectly fine (as in without any *noticeable* signs of a problem, or crashing before quitting). I actually can't remember if the bsod would come up in the beginning ^^;  But NOW, the bsod comes up when I eject the disc even if I let the computer sit for a while after quitting and making sure nothing related with the game is still running. I haven't played it repeatedly so I've only had a handful of bsods, but they first said "page fault in nonpaged area" before the latest one, which gave no message. I've read that message means a memory problem, but what does it mean if that message doesn't show up anymore???

Here's the most recent bsod code:

0xC0000007E (0xC000005, 0x806E694F, 0xF7AB0C30, 0xF7AB092c)

I have an Inspiron E1505, with XP SP3 Home Edition. My drivers are updated, except my cd/dvd drive. I've looked all over for this particular problem with the game - lots of people have similar crashing problems, but not quite the same.

Other things I noticed: A couple times the game disc will spin-up really, really loudly in the drive and never stop doing that even after quitting. But, there was one time I ejected it without the stop error, when I didn't play in my custom neighborhood although not for very long.  That's why I thought it was a game conflict, but apparently not.  If anything, does anyone know what this code means, or how I'd go about fixing this if possible?

Any help at all will be really appreciated!! :)

Hi there,

I think the best is run the hardware test to see if you hardware running fine. If not error from hardware, then we can focus on the app and OS.  Then go find out from the Event Viewer to find out more about the crash. Your BSOD code should be able to tell which EXE causing issue, so it’s easier if you could provide more info.

I play games too, but not the Sims 2. But I assume the game able to run on Virtual CD or Virtual Disk.

If I were you, I will try to install and run the game on virtual drive for 2 reasons:

1. My CD-Rom is not needed during the game.

2. I can keep my CDs in safe place without scratches when handling it in and out from CD-Rom Tray.

Hi, thanks for answering!

Last night I looked at the Event Viewer and the Disk Manager, and I also looked at some websites that list the different bsod codes and used the Event Viewer to send the details to Microsoft. My error was Event 51 and I remember it specifically mentioning Harddisk1/D, if that helps at all (I can post the box Microsoft gave me and all the codes from the Event Viewer if you want).  The Disk Manager listed everything as healthy, and honestly I don't know where "harddisk1/D" refers to. Harddisk 1 was what my external hard drive is listed under, while my "regular" hard drive is 0.  How do I run the hardware test, by the way? :emotion-10:

Lastly...how do I install the game on virtual drive? If I DO do that, would there be problems with space? I almost think the Sims 2 would take up too much space, although I don't know if it's possible to even run it from Virtual Disk. I'll have to look that up. In the meantime, I'll be posting more details shortly (at the moment I'm on a different computer).

Thanks again!

Hmm ok. Unfortunately last time it didn't have a message at all, or even the name of a driver or anything at the bottom. It skipped "the problem seems to have been caused by" entirely. Well, I'll run the hardware test and look into my drivers.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Andromeda1 ,

The Stop code usually indicate the problem area. Have a look at the picture below:

1. Which file, what handler is causing the BSOD

2. Stop Code

But base on your post, I found some information from MSDN. Check this out.

It appeares to be "Bug Check 0x7E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED"

Have you seen this message:"SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" together with the Stop code you received? If Yes, then here is the lead to the problem:

1. Resolving Issue

  • Make sure you have enough disk space. (Please check both of your drives)
  • If a driver is identified in the bug check message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates.
  • Try changing video adapters. (Not Applicable, but should check the driver's version)
  • Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates.
  • Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. (May be, you need to check)

2. Read through the MSDN cause it mentioned about other possibility.

For the Virtual CD, refer from this website, it teaches you how and what is needed to run a CD Emulator/ Virtual CD and creating the CD ISO.

You can trigger the Hardware Test  (Dell Diagnostic) by Press and hold the key while powering the system on. Read from the link for more information.

Hi,

The IO_WARNING_PAGING_FAILURE doesn't help much in this case because it is under the Event ID 51. but you can try to understand it with the HEX code you have with this page from Microsoft . I don't hope you crunch your head for this :emotion-2:

Beside this, does BSOD happens "ONLY" when your external Harddisk attached and you are ejecting the CD (The Sims) ? What kind of question was that? I'm not sure, just got to ask.

Anyway, I'm going to get an external Harddisk and check a few things which I am not sure.

1. Can we set paging file on external Harddisk Drive which connects through a USB cable?

2. Can Dell Diagnostic Harddisk Test run test on the external Harddisk Drive which connects through a USB cable?

Wish good luck to me and you, cause I was hoping someone can answer me too.

Well, I don't have the external harddrive attached when I'm running the game.  I don't remember if I had it attached when I was installing the game -- I'm pretty sure I got it AFTER I installed the game. I have a copy of the game data on the hard drive, but that's about all I think of why it would be involved.  I did tests through its own manager thing and it's running fine.

BUT, last night after I ran the hardware test (which was all successful -- no problems), I decided to uninstall and reinstall the game just to see if that might do anything. The game went back to crashing again when quitting, but this time there was a sound loop and for some reason no message (like "this application has crashed..."  I just let the disc sit in the cd drive for a while, mostly because I really didn't want to see the bsod xD   When I finally ejected the disc.... NO BSOD.   :emotion-7:

And the hex code...well...do you mean the codes you can look at through Event Viewer? Microsoft didn't give me a code. I'll post both versions I guess (bytes and words ??? ) soon.

The codes, as promised (I went with words instead of bytes because they take up less space. I have no idea how to interpret the codes. :emotion-42: )

The event left from last night's issue was listed as an application hang with Sims2EP8.exe . As I look at the other disk error messages, I wonder if they really do have to do with the bsods because there was one last night BEFORE I ran the game. Could those be listed because I don't immediately connect the external drive and something is trying to run from it??? I feel like I'm l'm looking in the wrong places...I'm sooo confused. :emotion-43:

Thank you, mybesteffort :)  Looking at the first article, it looks really helpful. Maybe I'll figure out how to decode the hex code :emotion-11:  I wish they'd make it so it would just tell you in words the part that's messed up, but oh well maybe someday!

Thanks again mybesteffort ^^
