AMD RADEON nonfuction on Inspiron 3521

Hello everyone,

I've recently bought a Dell inspiron 3521 with an i5 intell processor and a Radeon HD 8730. But here's the problem: when I use switchable graphics, I still can only use the intell HD 4000 graphics and NOT the AMD gpu. In device manager it's listed as functioning. However; I can't seem to be able to use it. I've updated both drivers from the dell support and this doesn't help. Games run slow at bad resolutions, even slower at high res.

Yesterday I've tried the new beta driver from AMD and it showed me how my graphics could look when this switchable graphics would actually work, but that's a beta type; so I ran into problems quite fast. I did a full reset after that. However; I'd like to use the AMD graphics because that's the only reason why I chose to buy this laptop. In both W8 and W8.1 I keep getting these issues.

I've been searching this forum and others, but all references are for HP devices, and I don't want to do a factory system reset for a third time. I would like something that works without high level tweaking.

In short:

- I did a full system reset and installed ONLY the dell updates. For both the intell HD 4000 driver and AMD Radeon HD 8730 driver.

- I'm unable to use this AMD graphics card, even when I use the catalyst control centre (CCC).

- Only the intell HD 4000 is detected by third party programs. But in device manager I can find the AMD card and it says it's working correct.

- I want to use the AMD graphics for games, how?

How can I fix this? I'm not an expert, so please keep it simple. Preferably in a step-to-step way.

Thanks a lot!

I downloaded the AMD Mobility Radeon Driver Verification Tool from the AMD website, after that I ran the Dell update again. By installing this I am suddenly able to play at the highest graphic settings without notifications of my intel graphics running out of memory. Be honest, 6GB is a lot of memory to run out of. After selecting high performance in both CCC and the Switchable graphics menu My problem is resolved, for now. I don't know how, but it's fixed. No more epileptic seizures for me!

Here's the DL-page for the Driver Verification tool for this specific notebook (Dell Inspiron 15 3521) that seems to have fixed my issue

To Windows, and to most applications, the AMD GPU is transparent - because only the Intel GPU is wired to the display panel.  This is by design.

ALL video data passes through the Intel GPU on its way the screen - the AMD GPU is simply a video co-processor.

Are you unable to choose the AMD GPU with the Catalyst control panel?  Or CAN you choose it (which means it IS working, though as above, there are common misconceptions about the system setup -- starting with the fact that the AMD GPU can NEVER be the primary GPU in the system).

Hi EJN63, thanks for your reply!

In my Catalyst control panel there are no GPU's to choose from. Not even in advanced mode.

Though, I keep getting a popup when starting windows that Catalyst control center requires my attention, but there are no specifics or messages when I try and open it. The popup message has no response but to close down when clicked on.

I really hope you could help me fix it!
