OS Recovery Tool

Has any work been done to fix the Failure to Extract error we are seeing with the OS Recovery Tool? I see some suggesting using Rufus to create the recovery USB, but I am unable to find the .iso after the recovery tool fails, and cannot see where to download a Dell OEM iso file directly. Thanks

Use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to get the latest iso file. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You have to burn the iso file to media after copying the iso to your hard drive first.

You should post your model computer and explain why you need to reinstall. Run the diagnostics to make sure your hard drive and all the other hardware are ok.

Welcome to the Dell Community @mjtracy

Use the Dell OS Recovery Tool to create a USB recovery drive that you can use to reinstall the version of Windows or Linux that came with your PC:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/OSISO/recoverytool

You do not need to use Rufus.

Just make sure the USB drive is formatted Fat32!!!

First create a new Desktop folder named "DOSRT"

Download the file and copy it to the folder you just created.

Close all open windows and apps you may have running.

Go to that folder right click and "Run as Administrator"

It should then create a desktop shortcut.

Double click on the shortcut and follow the instructions to start creating the USB recovery.

For a clean Windows 10 install:

You can make a W10 USB flash drive installer with the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.

Use a blank 8GB or 16GB flash drive.

If your Laptop/Desktop is not working then use another Windows Laptop/Desktop

https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Here are the steps to create the W10 USB flash drive installer:

Plug in the blank USB flash drive:

CAUTION: Any content on the flash drive will be deleted.

Select Download tool now, and select Run.

If you agree to the license terms, select Accept.

On the What do you want to do? page, select Create installation media for another PC, and then select Next.

Select the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for Windows 10.

Select which media you want to use:

USB flash drive.

After creating the USB plug it into the Laptop/Desktop that you want to install it on.

Boot from the USB and follow the directions/instructions.

If asked to enter a product key during the installation process, select "I don't have a product key" option.

After W10 installs, you can install the drivers and available software from your Laptop/Desktop support page.

Best regards,

U2
