Need Help on adding HDD on blank slot for G7 7588
HI Guys,
I got a new Dell G7 7588 with 256 GB SSD and a blank SATA slot for 2.5 inch HDD. Now I had 2 spare 2.5 inch HDDs(1 seagate 7200 rpm 1 tb and Samsung EVO 850 256 GB) so I installed the Seagate one in that slot.
When I boot it up the Dell logo was stuck on the screen so I long press and hold power button to shut it down. Then I press power button again and it boots up fine.
I thought there is some issue so I ran the diagnostics in thorough mode and it came up clean.
Then I restored to factory image to the original factory installed SSD.
When I remove the SATA drive it works just fine.
I contacted Dell and they are saying that software is not covered since it seems like software issue which I didn't understand since I got this 2 days back from Best buy.
So I now replaced that 1 TB HDD with the Samsung SSD and it's doing exactly same.
When I was checking the SATA drive sequence it's showing Samsung as Sata 0-0-0 and the factory SSD as Sata 0-0-1.
Do you guys know anything that can make my additional drive work also?
Please help.

Same model and same problem after installing HDD (Seagate Barracuda). Tried several things but none worked at this moment.

is this a BIOS issue?

I checked the boot sequence using a third-party software (Bootice). It seems that the computer does try to boot from the SSD first so this is not the problem. It has to be something else. Could be the bios (if no other brands have this problem).

was it booting from sata 0-0 or 0-1 since the os drive is on 0-1 and the new drive is on 0-0. what's the point of buying a laptop with ssd if it takes 2 mins to bootup and why dell is giving an option to add HDD if they can't handle it. It looks like Dell has no idea to fix this and will deny to fix this by saying this is software issue and not hardware issue which is not covered under warranty. If I knew this I would have bought Lenovo or Asus. This is just non-sense that Dell makes this **bleep** and sell half-cooked mother-board and bios.

Have you gotten any answers on this? I just bought this laptop today with the intentions of adding an hdd but now I'm not sure if I should purchase one.

No I have returned it. I was not sure if this was ever going to get resolved. It is probably better to buy a laptop with both type of drive preinstalled.

Did you buy the G7 and successfully add the second hard drive? I just added a second SSD into the 2.5" bay, and I'm having the same problem as the OP. Anyone who's identified a fix, insights would be greatly appreciated.

No I returned it since Dell told me that adding a 2nd hdd didn’t fall under warranty and I have to pay to fix what ever the issue was. I tried all possible method but those didn’t work.

I too am having the same issue with my G7 15.
I recently added a 1 TB Samsung EVO 860 SSD to the secondary drive, and this is the cause. When the SSD is removed, it'll power on, no hanging on the Dell bios/splash screen. When the SSD is installed, it always freezes on the splash screen, requiring a hard power off, and upon powering on it'll boot up, no hanging.
Not sure what the solution to this odd problem is...

While looking at various boot options within the BIOS yesterday, the workaround that has worked for me was unchecking "Enable Secure Boot". Wonder if this works for others?

Had this issue on a totally different laptop (not the G7), and unchecking "Enable Secure Boot" worked for me. (I suspect there was a BIOS update that turned it on as a new default setting, but I have no proof.) I, too, would like to hear if the OP tries this and has success.

Well the OP returned it so we'll never know.
However, there was an update to the BIOS, where if Secure Boot is checked, the PC doesn't freeze on the splash screen. Dell Support must have heard our cries for help.
