Laptop audio jack not working
I have recently reset the Windows as my new Dell laptop was very slow since the date of purchase. Performance improved after reset, but, audio jack stopped detecting earphones and plays sound only through speakers. I read many threads on this, removed and installed the audio drivers, updated the drivers, etc. None of these solutions are working. Any other solution that you can offer?
Laptop: Dell Inspiron 5482
OS: Windows 10 Ver. 1903

Typically installing updated audio drivers from SupportAssist or using the Dell support page and then entering your service tag to find/install the latest audio drivers for your system will resolve this.
This issue can occur if older audio drivers are installed during the Windows install process or if Dell Optimizer/Waves MaxxAudio is not installed as well. It is recommended to uninstall completely the existing Audio drivers before you Download and install the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver.
Also, check this helpful video about the issue:
If still under the purchased warranty, click the "Get Help Now" icon on the right to start a live chat session.

I had the same problem with my new Inspiron 15 7000. The Dell support assistant was useless. I have re installed the MaxxAudioPro program from windows store, which informed me the audio driver was outdated (nothing from the DSA) downloaded the driver from Dell US site problem fixed.

Hi, i have the same problem. I've tried, installed, reinstalled, every dell driver version available. The issue stays even on the latest driver (august 2020). Sometimes headphones will be detected but the second (or more, randomly) time i plug them in nothing happens, the sound keeps going through the speakers. It's kinda FRUSTRATING

Hi all, i got it working by installing the realtek audio console app and enabling the HD audio service startup in task manager (+reboot) so that the app can work. Looks like the realtek stuff needs software to know where to send the audio output, that's kinda disappointing but it seems to ne working for now

Hi,
If your Laptop headphone jack not working, you can try to disable Front Panel Jack detection. Go to Control Panel > Relatek HD audio Manager. Then, you check the Disable front panel jack detection option, under connector settings in the right side panel. The headphones and other audio devices work without any issues.
Thanks and Best Regards:

I have had this problem for months! I have found a quick work-around. From Control Panel go to the Sounds RealteK driver. Disable it and then immediately Re-enable it. This only takes seconds. The socket will now work for earphones but only once - it reverts to speakers after the first time. Hope it works for others.

Problem solved:
Ditched the Realtek drivers including the latest from Dell. Installed the Windows driver:-
High Definition Audio Device
All working well - no problems with speakers or headphone socket.

I have a Dell XPS 9370, now with Windows 20H2. The headphone jack stopped working in the past couple of months.
Dell remotely accessed and did many things, among them reinstalling the latest Realtek driver package and that required two reboots-one to remove the old and one after installing the new. That file is Realtek-High-Definition-Audio-driver_MM88C_WIN_6.0.8895.1_A16.exe, 478,839 KB. Dell Support Assist was run completely and Windows Update was verified as totally up to date. Still no sound. The technician came and replaced a small part a couple of days later and that did not work. I was in the process of getting an Ubuntu install going for another PC and had burned a bootable Ubuntu ISO (ubuntu-20.10-desktop-amd64.iso) on a USB stick. The Dell tech booted this and Ubuntu recognized the insertion and removal of the headphones and they worked perfectly! In Ubuntu. Windows was still SOL.
Since then I saw info on using Windows audio drivers (instead of Realtek) and was going to try that, but I saw that the 2018 Realtek driver was still available on the XPS (see image), so I "updated" with that driver in Control Panel and now the headphone jack works fine!
The Realtek Audio Version 6.0.8895.1 [2/11/2020] needs to be recalled and fixed! It was/is the culprit in my case.

Same here, Insprion 13 5000. Turning the laptop off and on: works until you take the headphones out again and put them back in and no sound through them, just sound through the computer.

Same issue for almost 3 years. My workaround was to connect the headphones, go into Device Manager, Sound, video and games controllers, disable device, then enable device. Headphones spring to life. If the headphones are left connected you can manage audio through Control Panel/ Sound. However, if you are brave enough to disconnect the 3.5mm jack, just go back to Device Manager and rinse/repeat to get them going again.
