Charger light goes off when I plug it into the laptop

The green light on the adopter glows when i dont plug in the charger in to my laprop, but as soon as i plug in the pin into my laptop it goes off.So the battery is not getting charged...i came to know that is might be due to a short circuit in the motherboard...My doubt is "will the laptop work on the charged battery"...or else the laptop is completely dead.

The battery is a in good condition.. even when i  remove the battery and plug in the charger the same thing is happening. The battery is discharged.. so if i get it charged by keeping it in some other laptop and use it in this laptop will it work. It is inspiron 8yrs old one.. this is the first issue with this laptop

How old is the battery and what model computer? Check the battery health to see if it is weak or failed.

Replace the DC jack inside the system (the one to which the adapter connects).  If you need a part reference, post the full model number - i.e., Inspiron N5110, 5321, etc.

From your earlier description, it sounded like you were able to run the system from a charged battery - if so, the DC jack is likely the problem.  If not -- the mainboard is likely the faulty part - and if the system is eight years old, is likely better replaced than repaired.

So we can't swith on the laptop even on the battery alone, unless we replece the DC jack?

Hi
I've literally just had this issue , that's why I'm here.   I noticed my batter icon said "plugged in not charging" ,  so I looked at my adapter and oddly enough the mains light was off ,  but when I unplugged it from laptop it came back on.
Anyway turns out it was my external dvd/cd reader ,  I unplugged it , shut down my system , waited a few minutes and rebooted and everything is back to normal.
I've yet to plug my external dvd reader back in , I don't know if it will happen again though.

All the best

What fixed this for me was futzing around with the rubbery part of the AC plug (where it bends past the hard plastic part that plugs in).

More details: I was getting the "AC ... wattage ... F1 etc" message on reboot, so I noticed that the charging light was not on. When I pulled out the AC plug and plugged it back in, I noticed the charging light would go on for like 2-3 seconds then turn off. After futzing with the rubbery part of the AC plug, I got it so the charging light would stay on.

Note that the charging light going on at all indicated to me the problem was not in the AC jack, and the AC adapter brick light (the green one) was on, which I assumed meant the problem was not in the AC adapter per se.

Today I faced the same problem. I checked the adaptor with a another laptop. It's working fine. My laptop is dead and won't turn on. The battery was not healthy from 2 years. So I think the battery said good bye to me. But I am also worried about mother board. Should I get I new battery and try. If someone can please reply faster.

Thanks in advance
