Battery not charging when laptop turned on

Hey,

So, this is a common problem, I know, but I'm looking for clarification, and for any suggestions.

As the title says, the laptop no longer charges when it is powered on. It charges fine when in sleep mode or turned off, but not when turned on.

Oddly, the laptop sometimes says it is charging for maybe a second or two when first powered up, but then nothing. (It also sometimes randomly indicates it's charging, but I can't reliably recreate the circumstances under which this occurs.)

Now, here are some things I've tried already:

- Updated drivers, updated BIOS (with the CMD line 'force it' to circumvent the 'cannot update BIOS without AC cable attached' problem)

- Drained battery, fully charged battery whilst Laptop switched off

- Cleaned battery

- Uninstalled battery drivers, reinstalled

- Checked cable for damage, tears or hotspots

- Tried different power sockets

- Tried various battery settings (from BIOS menu and from Desktop/My Computer)

I'm running:

- Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-6100U CPU@ 2.30GHz 2.30 GHz

- 64-bit OS, x64-based processor

- 8.00 RAM

Aside from ll that, I can't think of what might be wrong. It's a little odd for me to come down one day to use my laptop, and find that, mysteriously overnight, the cable no longer charges properly.

Any ideas? I'm not really keen on buying a new cable, since it appears to be working fine (since it charges when the system is shut down)

Cheers,

Cal

Yeah, original adaptor, and I think so. I'll reboot and check again.

Is this the original adapter, and does the system recognize it (F2 at powerup to check)?

Hi, I just want to ask you if you were able to solve the issue. I’m currently facing a similar problem with Dell XPS 13 7390. I just got it today and the laptop cannot be charged when it’s on. It works only when it is off. It is a USB - C charger, 45 W.

Hi,

Could you please confirm when you hover the mouse towards the battery what is says"Plugged in, charging or not charging".

Kindly go to BIOS by tapping F2 after restart and let me know the status of the Adapter and Battery?

Is the adapter shipped with the Dell system?

Kindly private message me the service tag

Has your problem been resolved? I have the same problem with you. My laptop can't charge when it's turned on. I have tried to unplugged my internal hard disk but it didn't work

Can you help me, with anything you know..

Thanks @calwallace

I have also followed all the steps.  This is my 2nd Dell laptop with this exact problem.

My first thankfully, started happening within a week of getting it.  Unfortunately, I have overseas working and when I returned home 2 months later it was a battle to get it replaced.

I returned it and ordered a new one and 11 months in it started doing the same thing.  Dell REFUSED to cover the warranty and claimed that as it was a replacement the warranty had expired.  Although I did return and was credited my original purchase $ and purchased again and received the same model.

BTW, I still get warranty expired notices for a laptop that I returned for a refund.

But, I digress.  I have tried EVERYTHING suggested in the forums.

Occasionally (under circumstances I have yet to reproduce) it says charging when plugged in and turned on.

If anyone has something new they have tried, I would appreciate hearing about it.

After being a Dell user for 15+ years this will be the last of their equipment I purchase.

It's a possibility battery is failing or has failed and needs a new battery replacement.

If you haven't done so yet, run Dell Offline Diagnostic tool on the computer to check status of the Battery Health. Just expand Check Battery Health Status in Diagnostic in link below and then follow steps

I found a way to address the issue on my end!! I have a laptop thats only a few months old. Mostly used while plugged in at a desk. And it would charge overnight while the laptop is off, but not while the lpatop was plugged in and on. It would say charging, but the battery would not increase.

Go To Dell Optimizer--> Power--> Turn on Dynamic Charge Policy. But you could also turn it off and try and mess with the charging policies below.
