Inspiron 3891 2nd Sata hard drive
I’m new to Dell PCs having just replaced my old pc with this 3891. I see in the specs there are two sata ports. Came from the factory with one Sata and one SSD. I haven’t opened the cover yet but is there a slot for a second sata drive? TIA

Thanks very much for the good info. I think rather than trying to installing another internal drive I'll take the easy way out and use an external usb3 ssd drive. Should be fast enough for my purpose, a lot easier to install and reasonably priced.

The specs on this page list the following below as compatible drives. Note that it does not list 2 SATA drives as compatible. So you can have a SATA drive and an M.2 SSD but not 2 SATA drives per the specs. And though is lists 512GB as the largest M.2 SSD, you can go up to a 2TB and it is compatible. So you already have the 2 compatible drives installed per the specs.
This section lists the storage options on your Inspiron 3891.
Your Inspiron 3891 supports one of the following storage configurations:
● One 3.5-inch hard-disk drive
● One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive
● One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive + One 3.5-inch hard-disk drive
The primary drive of your Inspiron 3891 varies with the storage configuration. For computers:
● with a solid-state drive, the solid-state drive is the primary drive
● without a solid-state drive, the hard-disk drive is the primary drive
Table 11. Storage specifications
Storage type Interface type Capacity
3.5-inch SATA hard drive SATA AHCI, up to 6 Gbps Up to 2 TB
M.2 2230, PCIe NVMe, solid-state drive PCIe Gen 3 NVMe, up to 32 Gbps Up to 512 GB
Slim optical drive, optional SATA AHCI, up to 1.5 Gbps N/A

you can install two 2.5" ssd using a Dell 3.5 to 2.5 adapter. motherboard does have three sata ports enough for odd and two sata ssd. In BIOS you can enable all three sata ports. Of note the new Dell motherboard uses 6 pin ATX12VO from psu therefore it is the motherboard (not psu) that has to supply sata power to drives. Dell proprietary sata cable connects mini 8 pin SATA PWR port (#6) on mobo to the drive. If this cable has only single sata power connector, you can replace with a mini 8 pin cable that has two sata power connectors to power two ssd.

Hi - If I understand this thread, I can add a 2nd SSD by getting the ATX Mini 8 Pin to 2X Right-Angle 15 Pin SATA Hard Drive HDD Power Adapter Cable and a mechanical adaptor to contain the existing 3 1/2" HDD and new 2 1/2" SDD. But what about a data cable 'adapter' for the new SDD, that I assume is necessary. Then I can go into BIOS, etc. Please advise. Thanks
