Inspiron 3671, additional hard drive, #6
Just purchased a Dell Inspiron 3671 with a 512 GB SSD as the primary drive. Bought a Seagate Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" HD and installed it, hooked up the two cables as required. The desktop does not recognize the new HD and I don;t think the HD is spinning (I don't feel any vibrations). What am I doing wrong or what do I need to do? The HD's model number is ST2000DM008.

If you can't feel any vibrations the cables may not be in tight usually there is a clip on the SATA cables and you will hear it lock into place make sure the cables are in securely on BOTH ends including going to the motherboard and PSU. Once you feel the drive is working you will need to go into computer management in Windows and initialize it then create your partitions.

That is always a possibility do you have another drove you can attach to the cables that you know works? Did you get a set of cables with the drive or did you just get an OEM drove which means they just give you hard drive in an antistatic nag no box, no software, no manuals, etc?? The cables could also be bad.

Nope, that doesn't do it for me. I have removed and reconnected the two cables from the MB to the HD and heard and felt them click into place. I have not removed and reconnected the cables at the MB but the connections feel secure. When I disconnected the black cable from the HD with the computer on (probably not a good idea!), the monitor screen went black, indicating that there is some communication between the MB and the HD. and I assume the cable connections to the MB are alright. l cannot feel any vibration when I touch the HD but it's hard to tell because there is some vibration from the desktop (CPU fan?). I wonder if there is a something that I need to do to make sure there is power to the HD. Other possibility is that the HD (brand new) is DOA?

Thanks for your response. No, I don't have another spare drive at hand but I may try to see if the HD from my current desktop (Vostro) will work. The HD I purchased just came in an antistatic bag, without cables but my new Inspiron does have a pair of cables leading the the MB and their connectors fit those of the new HD.
I can certainly operate the new Inspiron with its 512 GB SSD and store documents on an external HD but I'm annoyed that, what I thought was a simple procedure, turns out to be a challenge.
