M4500 memory upgrade first gen i5 processor

I am trying to find out exactly what configuration of memory size to use in my M4500 laptop to get to at least 8GB. I ordered and installed a single 8GB DIMM recommended by and bought from Dell: got an error screen saying that windows could not load. MUST I use only 2-4GB DIMMs? This link in this forum seemed to say so:

Thank You

Max RAM per slot is 4G.  2X4 = 8 total max with a dual core CPU.

Only with a quad core CPU (i.e., i7Q) is 8G per slot supported.

Thanks.

I guess what is confusing about the CPU is that they are usually written about as "Quad Core" when this CPU really has 4 "Threads" - here is the system info:

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU       M 520  @ 2.40GHz, 2400 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

So I should return the 8GB memory stick and get 2@4GB.

Again thank you

Al

The i5 is a dual core processor - each core has hyperthreading, so it shows four threads (2X2).

An i7 quad will show 4x2 = 8 threads.(or 8 logical processors).
