I keep getting a "your system is low on virtual memory" message. How to fix?

I have an Inspiron  e1505 laptop running Windows XP. I have more than enough space on the hard drive, and 1.99 GB of RAM. But whenever I run more than a few open tabs in Google Chrome or Firefox, I get an error message saying my system's low on virtual memory. If I don't shut down and restart, first the browser then MS Office (the only program I run at the same time) crashes.

I know I'm supposed to fix it in the "Performance Options" section of "My Computer," but it keeps resetting itself once I do.

Currently, it says the "Space available" is 37653 MB. Recommended is 3057, and I have the "system managed size" selected, which is currently 2038. Not sure why it has set itself to lower than the recommended number.

I can set it manually, but to what number? And will that solve the problem? Thanks so much!

Set it manually to 4000 MB or so. Make both the minimum and maximum the same. This allows the OS to set a fixed space for the VM, so it is not spread all over the drive. Best to clean up the hard drive and then use a third part defragger, such as Smart Defrag to optimize the drive. Then set the VM to zero for max and min, apply, then set both to 4000 and apply. This will fix the VM to a 4GB contiguous space for fastest access.

Thank you! But it didn't work.

No matter what I set it to, it still gives me the "virtual memory" error message. It seems to do this when I have more than 2 or three tabs open on Google Chrome, and MS Word working at the same time. Nothing else is ever open. Could something be bleeding my memory? If so, how do I uncover/fix? This is crashing my computer several times a day!
