dimension 3000 sata compatible?

I have a dell dimension 3000 desktop computer and I just bought a new internal dvd burner (SATA).

I opened up my computer only to see that it doesn't look like I can install a SATA device.  is the dimension 3000 SATA compatible?  do I have to make some adjustments to install a SATA device?

thanks for your help.

Sorry, but the D-3000 does not support SATA, only IDE/EIDE drives.

Return the SATA drive and buy a IDE DVD burner.

bev,
thanks so much for your help.  I bought the drive from compusa and since they are going out of business they won't accept exchanges or returns.

what about the possibility of using a sata/ide adapter?  is this a possibility at all?

thanks.

Yes, you could use a PCI SATA controller card or a SATA to IDE adaptor similar to this.

But, the cost of buying either a controller card or the adaptor, would be close to buying a IDE DVD burner.

I have the same issue but my PC is a Dimension 8400.  Could I install an SATA DVD burner or would I have the same problem?  My mother board has two available SATA ports but I don't know whether they could be used for an optical drive or whether they can only be used for RAID hard drives.

Yes, they support non-RAID.

Thank you for the information.  I want to switch to an SATA DVD burner to solve a problem I am having with my IDE burner.  Since upgrading to Vista, my IDE burner keeps disappearing.  I keep needing to reboot to get it back.  No one at Dell or microsoft has so far been able to solve this problem.  I am hoping that an SATA burner will not disappear like the IDE burner.  Any thoughts on my plan?

Thanks again for the information.  Microsoft promised to call me tomorrow to let me know if they have a solution for the disappearing DVD drive problem.  I have read many postings on internet forums about this issue.  The most common fix is to modify the registry to delete upper and lower filters.  That only works some of the time but did not work for me.  Even though micosoft has elevated my issue to their "research department"  (probably two kids sitting at a table in India), I will be quite surprised if they provide a solution.  If they don't, I will try an SATA burner.  I have gotten different answers to the issue of whether I can install an SATA DVD burner in my Dimension 8400.  You sound like you really know what you are talking about so I will give it a try.  The internet vendor I have contacted to purchase the drive promised me that I can return it if it does not work in my PC.  At worst, I will only be out some time, but no money.  So thanks again.

Yes, you should be able to install a SATA optical drive. Remember to set the drive to 'Auto' [on] in the system setup after installation.

You will need a SATA data cable and maybe a 4-pin molex to 15-pin SATA power adaptor, depending on the DVD burner purchased.

Personally, I still use IDE optical drives in my 8400, as they are still working fine.

Good luck and I sincerely hope everything works out.

Ps. I liked the description 'probably two kids sitting at a table in India'. Many a true word said in jest. :)

Sounds like a Vista problem driver problem, but I have no idea if changing to a SATA burner will help

Finding the correct drivers for my 8400 hardware, is one of the reasons, I'm still using XP Professional.

One more comment on this issue.  I understand that there are two types of SATA controllers.  One type is RAID only.  I need to be sure that the SATA connectors on my motherboard will support non-RAID.  Do you know?
