On certain web pages my browser stops responding. The mouse still works but everthing else freezes and I have to ctrl-alt-delete to shut down internet explorer.

Any suggestions?

What web pages is your browser freezing on? It could be bad code on these web pages. Have you added any other software, like download managers? How are you connecting to the internet? What browser are you using? If you can provide more information, someone here will likely be able to help you.

If you are using one, what PPPoE software are you using?

its stalling or freezing probably because you have a dynamic IP address, running PPOE and what you need to do is to go into network settings, find your NIC and add in a dummy IP address and subnet mask to "trick" the NIC that you have static IP. That should elminate your problems.

Try these IP address of 192.168.1.1, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Other reasons why you get slowdowns are you need to adjust your Default Receive Window, Maximum Transmission Units, and TTL settings in the Windows registry but start with the IP address change. My guess is you are experiencing some packet loss and the latter tweaks are necessary. Unfortunately, neither AOL or your service provider can provide Microsoft support. They know how to fix it but they cant because Microsoft wont let them provide support for Windows so most DSL users are on their own to get it working. Go here and see what is going on with your DSL: http://www.dslreports.com/tools. Then find the page with suggestions on what to do, which includes the suggestions I have given you in more detail.

The alternative and one that will cure some other PPOE WinPoet blues with DSL is to get yourself a router and take PPOE out of Windows since PPOE is native and embedded in the router. I recommend this solution instead of messing with Windows. What kind of modem do you have (please dont say USB because that is the worse type one can get). If you have an external modem from Westell, you can flash the modem for $20 using a firmware upgrade into a "cheap" but decent router. The main purpose is to move PPOE out of Windows. Try the IP address change first.
