What do you think of this Custom Build PC?

Question

I was talking to someone on AIM, and about what kind of PC they have. They said a family friend made PC for them. They suggested someone else they know build a PC for me. I know who this person is, and they are graduating next year from the same h.s. I graduated from this year. Anyways, they've been doing this since 6th grade.

Amd A64 3200+ Processor (Latest Technology)

DFI Nforce4 Mothorboard. Digital 7.1 Audio, SATA, PCI-E

G.Skill 2 Sticks of 512Mb DDR400 Ram (1Gig)

Nvidia Geforce 6800 256mb PCI-E16x Video Card (One of the top cards)

Western Digital SATA 250gig Hard Drive ( I believe he is going to partition the hard drive. He said one drive would be C: and the other would be D: and Windows would be installed on either one. This would keep my programs for graphic design and especially for gaming nice and fast)

Aopen Black DVD+RW 16X Drive (Fastest Out, Does it all)

Aspire Case W\ Window and blue lights

Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Set.

Price = $1050 For Everything. Killer Pc.
Everything has a 3 year Warenty On PARTs.

Will Include Windows Xp 64bit pro
Office 2003 pro (Word, Excel, powerpoint, access)

And other stuff

All I need to buy is a monitor and speakers. What do you think about the PC and the price?

Never heard of that memory.

You should consider a X800XL rather than a 6800 256MB. The X800XL will outperform the 6800 256MB by a large margin. It is also about the same price.

You should not get XP Pro x64 yet. It is slower than XP Pro x86 (32-bit version). Microsoft themselves do not recommend it. There are virtually no programs that are 64-bit. The only one I can think of is the 64-bit version of FarCry.

It's a pretty good configuration and a good price. I would go for more of a name brand memory. How important is gaming to you? The 6800 is sometimes classified at the top end of mainstream or the bottom of highend. The best bang for the buck in highend is the X800XL. How big is that power supply in the case? With some headroom for future upgrades you should be looking around 450W. Who is standing behind that 3 year warranty?

G Skill is excellent memory for overclocking but it is overpriced for normal use. Also get a good name brand powersupply for your setup.

Just wondering if the copy of Windows XP and Office Pro from this person will be legitimate (i.e. legal) versions, and that you will be getting official versions of the disks, especially at that low price.  Office Pro itself normally runs several hundred dollars itself, I think, and some people just download and burn illegal copies of Windows and Office.  Just something you might want to ask. Does anyone think this PC is a little overpriced?  I checked with someone else who is willing to build a PC, and they came up with a lower price.  The charge for this to be built is supposed to be $50-$100, and the person who said this is overpriced, added up the cost of the parts, and figured out that he is charging about $200-$250, or maybe charging a bit more for the software (I was thinking).  I think I am going to have someone else build me a PC.  He also said he would do it for free.

After about a few days of research, you could do it your self you know. It's not as hard as most people think. The hardest part is probably the CPU. And knowing were to plug in the wires (if you mess this up, the motherboard can blow).

Get a better video card. You won't get anywhere with that card.

If you try to play BF2 with that card, you would only pull low-medium. A 6600GT will pull medium. A X800XL or 6800 256MB will play perfectly.
