USB 3.0 for Inspiron 580 desktop?

I have an Inspiron 580 desktop less than a year old running 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium.  I was about to buy a new external USB disk drive for backups, and noticed many of them now support USB 3.0, and USB 3.0 cards are reasonably priced.  I'm wondering if I should upgrade to a USB 3.0 card.  Does anyone know any reason there would be a problem with this?  Have you done this - had any problems I might not foresee?

I believe you would have problems if you try to install both 2 and 3. They won`t coexist in that system. The pc wasn`t set up for 3.0 technology.

If you upgrade to 3.0 I don`t think your mouse and keyboard will work as they are set to 2.0. If you purchase an external drive that supports 3.0 it will still work on 2.0.

Thanks.  Good point.

Might it be possible to add USB3.0 in addition to the USB 2.0 already there?  Can they co-exist?

Or maybe I could go with wireless keyboard and mouse, assuming the wireless receiver(s) would work on USB3.0.

I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work, although I confess I haven't tried it myself. Up to now, I've stayed with eSATA for external drives, having found USB 2.0 too slow.

USB 3.0 capability can be added by installing a PCI-e card with this ports. I have done this in a similar computer and used it for more than a year, no problems at all.

USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0. So, any USB 2.0 device, including "mouses" and keyboards, work perfectly with USB 3.0, once Windows is loaded and the card is energized.
