Problem with 5.1 Surround sound and intergraded audio
i just got this new 4600 the other day every thing decked out , except the sound card, i chose the intergrated. So, i have these 5.1 altec lansing speakers (model 251) lieing around, so i plug them in to my motherboard (green, yellow and, black jacks). so after i plug them in, im up for a nice game of halo. only problem is there not in 5.1. so i go to windows control panel and switch on 5.1 sound under the audio program. Thinking that will work i head back to halo. i realize that i hadent set the game to recongnize the 5.1 so after some playing about with the settings i find it. and switch it on too. Still no luck.
Now i am getting sound from all 6 speakers. just not 5.1 sound. im not able to hear people sneaking up on me in games, im not able to hear grenades expoleding behind me. it's just left and right channel being spread out to all 6 speakers and thats not 5.1.
My speakers are switched to 6 channel mode, all the connections are pluged in too. i dont have any idea what could be wrong.
Why dosent this work? I think im doing everything right. Is it becasue i have intergrated sound. and if so, why are the jacks there and why did it say when bought the system that is supported 5.1 sound?
Any tips? help? anything?

ok i found the settigns to get it to work! YAY! for anyone else having this problem. Ok
go to the sound volume control. Then go to propertires. then enable the view of front, center, and rear speakers, then you can change there indiviual volumes. ok there is an advanced button there. click it. go down to the bottem of the window and uncheck the two boxes that say 2sp > 6sp and 6sp > 2sp. this will give you 5.1 then. good luck!
man that took forever....

I am a german owner of a Dimension 8300 with 5.1 onboard soundchip and have nearly the same problems as pnrgi! I´ve also found these settings in the advances propperties and disabled them, but i still get no 5.1 sound although everything under Windows XP is set to 6 Speakers (5.1) and so does PowerDVD! I am using the 5.1 speakerset MMS 5650 from Dell!
I´ve taken for eg. the THX Optimiser from SW: Episode II to test all the channels. The THX Optimiser puts out a tone in each of the speakers to test them one by one. But my center and the surroundspeakers make no sound at all! Instead of this the testtone for the center- and surroundspeaker is played by the frontspeakers as if it is simulated by them. I´ve also called the technicial service but they still have no idea what to do. So they want to change my whole mainboard but i still think that´s a problem with the driver or settings! That´s because the surroundspeakers work if i use for eg. the "spreading"-mode of the soundchip in which the sound is played by the front- and surroundspeakers simultaniously. So the surroundspeaker work and can be used by the soundchip. If the chip has a malfunction or a defect the surroundspeakers would not work at all, i think?!
Can someone help me please? I habe no idea what to do next! Do i really have to change my mainboard? Thank you for your attention!
Best regards

Hi,
This is for the Dukeman. Try the following steps for your speaker system and please mail me back if this has work or not.
Audigy 2 of the Soundblaster Live.
Than click on CREATIVE RESTORE DEFAULTS.
The defaults settings will restore.
Soundblaster live of Audigy. Select the creative mixer.

@Sevi
Thank you for your reply. But your tip will not help me at all because I have these problems with the onboard soundchip! I also have another Dell (Dim. 4550) with a SB Live! 5.1 and don´t have any problems with the speaker set from Dell! But I now have found the reason for the problems:
To say it shortly, it is the soundchip itself! The onboard chip does not have an AC-3 decoder installed, so the AC-3 signal goes out to the speaker system undecoded. The connected speakers (or receiver) must have a decoder installed which can handle the AC-3 signals. But the Dell MMS 5650 doesn´t have such a decoder installed so it can´t "understand" these signals! The result is that you´ll never be able to listen to DD 5.1 sound with the onboard soundchip! It´s a hardware problem! You can read the whole facs on the homepage of SoundMax at http://forms.analog.com/Form_Pages/soundMax/soundMaxSupportFAQ.html#question23!
I called Dell technical support and they confirmed the facs but they had no opportunities to help me! So I called my sales agent and we agreed that I will get an SB Live! 5.1 soundcard for free to fix the problems. I received the card via UPS now but don´t have installed it yet. But I´m optimistic that everything will work fine after the installation!
Never the less thanks for your help and a Happy New Year!!!
Greetings

I also have a Dim 4600 with the 5.1 integrated sound. Not sure if my problem is the same as the ones above. I do not get Dolby Digital 5.1 sound when playing DVDs or 5.1 or EAX when playing games.
I am using Creatives Inspire 5300 5.1 speakers and WinDVD Platinum 5.0. I have reloaded drivers countless times and set the control panel audio to 5.1. It almost looks like none of the programs recognize the SoundMax as a 5.1 audio driver. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
David
PS. I have confirmed that the speakers are working.
