PCI Express 16 Dell Inspiron 560
Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 560 that had a graphics card in the PCI express slot, I removed this a few weeks ago as I no longer required it in this machine, however I wanted to increase the SATA capacity of the machine so I bought a PCI express 2 SATA expansion card that will work in a PCI express 16 slot, but when I plug it in to the PCI express 16 slot the PC appears to boot but the display won't work, I'm guessing that the machine still thinks there is a graphics card in this slot, is there a way to 'reset' this slot? So far I have tried removing the CMOS battery, resetting the BIOS to defaults via the jumper and within BIOS, still no luck :-( the machine works fine without both cards (SATA expansion and graphics), I have also tried the SATA card in another machine that has a PCI express 16 slot and it works fine so I know that new hardware is ok, any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

BIOS may only support a video card in the x16 slot. And when there's any card in the x16 slot, it probably disables the on-board video outputs.
BTW: Did you uninstall the video card driver in Windows before you removed the video card? You might have to reinstall the card and connect monitor to it. Then uninstall the driver in Device Manager, and remove the card afterwards. Don't think that will help with your problem but might be worth a try...

Thanks for the reply, I did wonder if that might be the case, I didn't uninstall it from Windows first, but when it wouldn't show the screen at BIOS level I figured that wouldn't matter as the PC hadn't got as far as loading the windows driver.

Still won't hurt to uninstall that video driver since you no longer need it...
