Optiplex GX620 memory limitation

My GX620 currently has two 1GB memory modules but as I now have Windows7 64-bit, what is the maximum memory I can install?

The upgrade section says 4GB (with the warning that a 32-bit OS will see less than this) but since a 64-bit OS can see more than 4GB (my Studio XPS has 6GB) why can't I fill the slots with 2GB modules?

The GX620 can support 2 gig modules.  With 4 memory slots and a 64 bit CPU and OS it will see 8 Gigs of Ram in bios but you cant use 8. You can only use 3GB or 3.5GB. You CANNOT utilize more memory than 3.5 Gigs even when you install a 64-bit version of your OS This is a GX620 Limitation.   Models with Pentium D also support NX and the other requirements for Windows 8.

Recommended Upgrade

Max CPU is Pentium D 960  with BIOS A11
That series of CPU REQUIRES the Copper heatpipe Heatsink.

Hi Fircroftstar,

Yes, your system can use 2GB modules in each slot.

So the GX620 will recognise and access 8GB under 64-bit Win7?

The GX620 will support 2GB max per slot, but the combined total of all slots cannot exceed 4GB.

Hope that clears things up.

I have a GX620 with 4GB of memory, but it only uses 3.5GB...

I have a GX620 with the same issue. Windows 8 is reporting that roughly 512mb is reserved for the system, leaving 3.5gb free.

This is an Intel issue and it's their hardware that is reserving the memory.

Aye, and this occurs with 64-bit operating systems, too. (Mine is configured with Windows 8 Professional 64-bit.)

You lose RAM to the integrated graphics and other internal uses based on the hardware design. The 3.5 Gig is user-accessible, the system sees all 4 Gig of installed RAM, but takes some of it for internal uses...

The 620 has further limitations.  It will take 4 modules of 2 gigs each and show 8 gigs in bios A11.

HOWEVER it will not boot with 64 bit os and will never show more than 3.5 gigs ram useable even with EMT64 CPU AND OS.

This is an Intel Chipset problem and not a Dell Issue.  I booted with 32 bit XP and vista fine but only 3.5 gigs available.  With 64 bit os its black screen then crash never booting.

My GX620 is configured with Windows 8 Professional x64 (on an SSD) with 4gb G.SKILL PC6400. It boots, and quite quickly, but as you say, only 3.5gb is visible.

What I'm saying is that 8 gigs is recognized but will not boot when 64 bit os is applied. When 32 bit os is running 3.5 gigs is max. :emotion-9:

It will post and boot with 32 bit xp and 8 gigs. But its a waste due to the ram being unusable.

The main reason for letting people know that 2 Gig Dimms work is buying 2 dimms of 2 gig each vs 4 dimms of 1 gig each.  I see 1 gig ddr2 dimms and 2 Gig Dimms being sold at the same price.

SpeedStep,

I bought 2- 2GB sticks of DDR2 PC-6400 non-ECC to upgrade my GX620 Ultra Compact (only 2 memory slots) running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Was terribly slow with only 1GB installed.

After installing the 4GB RAM, it wouldn't boot up. Tried removing one stick...still didn't work.

Are you saying that it won't be able to boot with 4GB installed if I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit???

2Gig sticks must be INTEL compatable Low Density and Must use BIOS A11
