Optiplex GX240 Memory

Hi,

I hope someone can help me.

i recently upgraded the memory on my poweredge 1400sc to 2GB and removed the 1GB that was already in there, the purpose for this was to allocate 256mb per machine in my office (all are optiplex 240) however now when i put the ram in each machine all i get is a strange buzzing noise.

The ram that i took from the server is all just Kingston 168Pin Dimm Ram 133Mhz speed and each piece is 256mb

Could someone please indicate to me where i am going wrong?

Many Thanks,

Arran Pumphrey

Maybe you're mixing ECC and non-ECC RAM. What are the specs on the RAM that was in before the upgrade?

Server memory is often ECC and Registered. You cannot use Registered or ECC ram unless the device you are installing the ram into supports it.

The 1400SC supports

128MB PC133 ECC Registered DIMM (p/n 311-1101)
256MB PC133 ECC Registered DIMM (p/n 311-0846)
512MB PC133 ECC Registered DIMM (p/n 311-1107)

The Optiplex 240 supports NON REGISTERD UN BUFFERED PC133 SDRAM.
Note that NONE of the Dell Partnumbers between the systems match.
This means the ram from one to the other is NEVER going to work EVER.

Dell OptiPlex GX240 (1.5GHz - 2.0GHZ)
Maximum Memory 1GB

128MB PC133 SDRAM DIMM Memory (p/n 311-9646)
256MB PC133 ECC SDRAM DIMM (p/n 311-4712)
256MB PC133 SDRAM DIMM (p/n 311-4705)
256MB PC133 SDRAM DIMM (p/n 311-7005)
512MB PC133 SDRAM DIMM (p/n 311-7007)
512MB PC133 ECC SDRAM DIMM (p/n 311-4715)

SpeedStep--for my future reference, where did you get those specs?

More accurately, where did you get the listing of compatible parts and their part numbers?

Many memory Vendors have the Dell part numbers.

If you do a search on Nextag for the 311 numbers you will find
that PNY, Crucial, Kingston, Memoryx.net, etc all have
parts.

Which would lead you to

My personal preference is http://www.memoryx.net

There is no such thing as a one stop universal works all the time every time with every dell ever made source for parts and part numbers. The ram works based on the bios and Particular chipset of the board.

Some try to blame dell for why certain parts dont work in certain models.

The GX1 and GX110 are a perfect example. Ram that works in the GX1 May or May NOT
work in the GX110. ECC RAM does not work in the GX110. Thats not dells fault.
Its based on what the INTEL 810E chipset support.

Just as High Density Ram doesnt work in the GX1 or GX110 because the
440BX or 810e INTEL chipsets do not support that ram. This wasnt a dell decision.
It was INTEL trying to force RDRAM down peoples gullet and they did not like it
nor take it.
