Optiplex 380 RAID

In the Optiplex 380 Service Manual, under system setup, Drive, SATA Operations it mentions the following:

configures the operating mode of the integrated hard drive controller.

  • RAID Autodetect / AHCI = RAID if signed drives, otherwise AHCI
  • RAID Autodetect / ATA= RAID if signed drives, otherwise ATA
  • RAID On / ATA= SATA is configured for RAID on every boot
  • Legacy = The hard drive controller is configured for legacy mode

I haven't been able to find any documentation on the RAID setup.  Does anyone know what RAID levels are supported?  Also, what is meant by "signed drives"?

There is currently a single hard drive in the system with Windows 7 Professional running on it.  I want to add a second hard drive (that is the same as the first) and then have the two drives set up for a RAID 1 (mirrored) configuration.  Can that be done with a drive that already has an OS and applications installed on it?  Will the RAID setup perform the initial duplciation of the current drive to the second drive when it is setup as RAID 1.

The setup of a RAiD array writes a "signature" onto each disk-drive that you choose to add to the "array".
