KM 714 wireless keyboard and mouse ALT functions

Hello --

I just purchased an XPS 8700 and opted to get the Dell KM 714 wireless mouse and keyboard.  Generally, it has been working fine, but I noticed that some functions I could do with other keyboards don't work.  For example, in Excel (or any Office application, I think), pressing ALT+7 should result in a bullet (such as when making a list); this does not happen with this keyboard.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

You didn't say what version of Office you're using, but in most versions you can program key combinations to insert symbols like the bullet point, etc.

Depending on the version, click Insert>Symbol and select the symbol you want. Office, by default, may have a key combo for that symbol which it will show, but you should be able to change it (or add) what combo you want, as long as that new combo isn't assigned to something else. It should show you what your key combo is assigned to if it's already in use, or it should say "unassigned".

I am using Office 2013.  The ALT+7 has always worked without me having to set it.  However, I think the ALT+7 shortcut may not be an Office feature, but a Windows feature.  I use Office 2013 both at work and at home.  At work, ALT+7 does result in a bullet and at home it does not.  One difference is that I use Windows 7 at work and Windows 8.1 at home.  So, I think I was wrong in thinking it was a keyboard difference; it may be that Windows 8.1 does not support this.

Or somebody in IT at work set it up so that Alt+7 gives you the • bullet.

You can do it manually in Excel by holding ALT and pressing 00149 on the keypad. That's certainly not as convenient as pressing Alt+7, but it should work.

I tried the ALT 00149 method; on my system, this does not produce a bullet but takes me to the "Save as" screen.  I tried this both in Excel and Word with the same results.
