How many volts is my CPU fan?

I have a Dimension L677r with a 50mm CPU fan. It's quit noisy and I"d like to replace it but don't know the voltage. How many volts should the replacment fan be? Any tricks to getting the right one?

TIA

dataBoy,

Most chassis fans run on 12v power.  The easiest way to determine what fan you need to replace your existing chassis fan is to remove it and check the markings on it.  It should provide some information as to the manufacturer, the size of the fan and the direction of airflow.  You can purchase a replacement fan from a local computer shop or any of a number of online vendors.  Check this link for one such vendor:

Careful!  Most Dell motherboards have a fan sensing motherboard such that if a fan without the sensor is installed, the bios halts with an error message.  I'm not sure if this particular model has that, in which case you'll need to replace the fan with one from Dell....

peterfelgate,

Fortunately, the L series did not incorporate any fan speed management or fan speed sensing technology.  A simple single speed fan is what was used in those older systems.
