Hardware Malfunction: NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error

Hello,
We recently observed the following error message upon shutdown of a 2-day-new Dimension 3100:

"***Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support.
NMI: Parity check / Memory Parity error.
*** The system has halted *** "

It will be appreciated if anyone can provide insight into the nature of this problem and how to resolve it. The error message has only shown up once.

Thanks

Hi,

This could be either if the memory is not properly installed... or at times if you try to shift or move the system, the memory sticks may cause this error to come up - in such a case, reseating the memory should help....
or else.....
try the following.....
1.)   Reverse any recent hardware or software changes to the system.
(Any new hardware, software, or configuration changes may cause conflicts with other applications and drivers.  )
These changes can sometimes be reversed by performing some or all of the following when available:
1.Remove recently added hardware.
2.Uninstall any drivers that have been installed via the Device Manager or the Control Panel.
3.Uninstall third-party software by using Add/Remove Programs:
4.Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
5.Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
6.The Add/Remove Programs window appears.
7.Look for the suspect software name in the list.
8.Click the Uninstall button to remove the software.

2.) Reseat all internal components
1.Shut down and disconnect power to the system.
2.Remove the computer cover.
3.One at a time, remove and reinstall a device from inside your computer.  Devices that must be reseated include:
a) All the cables and connections.
b) All the expansion cards (video card, modem, sound card, etc.).
c) The system RAM and any video expansion memory (if applicable).
When you have done this for all devices in your system, test it once again.

3.) Remove all expansion cards from the computer except the video card.
To remove all expansion cards from the sytem except for the video card (if present), complete the following
steps:
1.Shut down and unplug the system.
2.Press and hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds to drain the standby power.
3.Remove the system cover.
4.Remove all expansion cards except the video card.
5.Swap with known-good memory if available
6.Power down the system.
7.Unplug the external power connector.
8.Press the power button for five seconds to drain flea power.
9.Open the chassis.
10.Swap with known-good memory if known-good memory is available

If still you get the error - could be possible memory failure......
You should call dell tech support and let them know, if you have valid warranty, which I am sure you have as this is a new computer...they will replace the hardware if needed....

Good luck....

Anna.

Thanks for the response, Anna63.

I have removed a D-Link PCI wireless adapter from the system, to check if that was the culprit. I searched the forums and some others have had this exact problem in association with network cards. Keeping my fingers crossed!

No, I did not get the card working without having that problem reoccur. I guess the best solution is to simply use a different card.
