Note that most questions here are not answered by Dell, but by other users.

I've just received a Dimension 3000N w/2.8 GHz Pentium 4 w/HT technology - that's literally off Dell's own Order Confirmation. In reviewing the document at "http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dim8250/syssetup.htm#1084976" it's snapshot of the "CPU Info" screen clearly shows the hyperthreading option.

My "CPU Info" does not. Am I to understand that what I ordered I did not get? I ordered the configuration I wanted to include a Pentium 4 w/HT and I'm getting nervous that I got a bait-and-switch. I've not yet come across a note specfically regarding the Dimension 3000 series.

Can anyone comment on where I stand regarding HT?

TIA.

Note that replying to a thread that is nearly 2.5 years old is not the best way to get an answer on these forums.  Have you checked in the BIOS setup program to see if hypterthreading is enabled on your system?

Hi Steve,

You are correct. I didn't make note of the timestamps on the last posts.

To answer your question, yes, this is where I get confused. My BIOS (A02)
make no mention of hyperthreading anywhere. I'm running linux on the box
so the MS/Windows method of going thru Control Panel to see what it says re HT
is not an option. I'll research the Linux community if it has an equivalent.

I don't mind so much not being able to change the setting as I do not being
able to at least confirm whether it's enabled or disabled. Comments?

Thanks for your response,
fish

Sorry, I have no idea how to check for hyperthreading in Linux.

FishFloss,  also try posting in the Software - Linux forum regarding your HT question with that OS.  You can click here for a direct link to that forum.

Dear Dell

I just received a DELL TODAY! WOW! It's a loveable system! Check my specs below!
I was wondering, is HT tech enabled the first time I turned on my computer? or do I need to turn it on Manualy.

How? How do you go to BIOS? URGENT!

Thanks

Dreamerx,

Did you get your HT question answered?

The reason I ask is that I have a new Dell 2.8GHz Pentium 4 w/HT and my BIOS
says nothing about HT. Does yours? What BIOS version do you have (should be
upper right hand corner on Setup display). I'm wondering if my BIOS needs
updating - my Setup shows A02.

Majestic,

Thanks for the pointer - I will post the question to the Linux community
since the box in question is running as a Linux server. But I'm still a
bit miffed at the BIOS Setup being silent on the HT question. Indeed, Dell's
own Reference Manual for this model clearly states that their Setup can id
HT or not and I *think* I have the latest BIOS version. Oh well...

Thanks again,

Fishfloss, for your model BIOS version A02 is the latest release.  In checking the specs for your model I see that Dell could have shipped that model with two different 2.8 GHz processors.  One supported HT while the other did not.  Is it possible they shipped you the wrong one?  If the non-HT processor was shipped then that might explain why that option is not appearing in the BIOS Setup.

Well, this is getting messy. :^ Yes, it seems A02 is the latest version.

I actually have 2 problems. First, my order clearly stated 256MB DDR SDRAM @ 400MHz.
When I received the box my first order of business is to get into setup and help
verify the h/w. My A02 BIOS says my memory is clocked @ 333MHz. I complained to
Dell and they sent me a replacement 256MB stick. I removed the original stick
and compared the paper tags on both the original and replacement - they both state
256MB DDR 400 ... I went ahead and put the replacement stick where the original sat.
Get into Setup and viola! - 333MHz. :( This indicates a BIOS problem in detecting
correct memory speed.

Now throw in it's not showing anything re HT and I don't know what to make of this
h/w. Have I got to disassemble the entire box and stare at microfont chip tags to
confirm that I received what I ordered? IMHO the BIOS shold be the definitive source
of the real h/w. Whether you run Windows or Linux or anything else how can you
trust the OS to correctly detect h/w if the BIOS can't.

Thanks for your input. I appreciate the help. I think I'll call Dell and have a
word. :^
