GX1 BIOS upgrade results in Processor Mismatch

Yes, I got bit by this one, too... I have a 1 GHz processor (you'll notice that there are no warnings about this anywhere - next time I'll check the forums first).

Does anyone know the latest version of BIOS that I can install and not run into this? Will A08 work?

Ok, found an answer in another post - only A07 will work with processors faster than 600MHz (thanks, peterfelgate!).

I have the same problem. I upgraded to A10 and now have a processor type mismatch error. Is there any way to re-install A07? I can't get it to boot from floppy.

You must use a Pentiumii or Pentium3 266 - 600Mhz.

Set the jumper to 266 Mhz and then put in AN Old cpu and downgrade to A07.

That's right - only a slower processor will save you. I called around until I found a computer repair shop that had a 266MHz P2 sitting around, and they sold it to me for ten bucks. Swap in the slower processor and the machine should boot.

Pentium 2 and Pentium 3 are pin compatible, so you can use either - you just need to make sure the circuit card has the same shape. For example, my mini-tower GX1 has a "tabbed" processor module.

In order to put the A07 BIOS back in you'll have to boot from a floppy disk. That's because Windows won't let you change the BIOS out from under it. I was able to create a DOS boot disk on my old Win98 PC. I used the "format" command, and told it to create a boot disk and copy only the system files.

Download and copy the A07 BIOS executable onto the boot disk. Once you've booted to DOS you just invoke the executable by typing its name.

It's not too bad once you've got all the pieces ready to go. Good luck!
