I would guess the old floppy disk that the file is on is defective or in a format that your new computer can't read. Try recopying on a new disk. Check with the tax software support site for more help and/or post this in the software-other forum. Also see if other floppies can be read in the new drive to eliminate hardware problems--like a loose cable etc.
Is this happening with all kinds of floppies or just with this floppy. I believe, we have a bad floppy disk here. Try copying the same file but from a different floppy disk. Also while formatting a floppy disk, in the format window, do not select Quick Format, always select Full Format.
Thanks for a quick response but I have tried multiple disks - no good. I also tried all the selections on the FORMATTING window and I get error messages with every one of the selections. Any more Ideas?
What is the Version of Windows in the old computer. I guess, the new computer has Windows XP. If the old computer has Windows 98 or Me and if you are formatting the floppy in the old computer and copying the file and then while trying to read that floppy in the New Computer, i believe we would have errors. Because, Windows 98 & Me follows FAT partition and if you format a floppy disk in it, it will format the Floppy disk with FAT File system whereas Windows follows NTFS file system. Try formatting a floppy disk in the new computer, then copy the file from the old computer and try copying it onto the new computer.
OK--time to call Dell. You need to troubleshoot your floppy drive on the new computer. Dell will help you safely check for loose connections or a faulty floppy drive. This happens from time to time.
Yes, the old system is win98 and the new is XP. I have already tried to format on the XP but even THAT would not work. Each time I try to format,(on the new puter) I get one of three error messages:
1) Unable to quick format this disk(assuming I chose QUICK FORMAT)
2) Windows cannot complete this format(when I made NO choice)
3) there has been an I/O error(when I chose CREATE a Start-up BoOT DISK)
The only choice I have on the formatting window is QUICK FORMAT or CREATE a Startup BOOT DISK: depending on which of those I chose, I get one of the messages above. If I choose neither of those, then I get the #2 message above.........cannot complete this format
