Flashing the BIOS in Windows 7

Hi guys, I've got a Dell OptiPlex GX520 with a Pentium 4 Processor and the A01 revision of the BIOS.

I purchased a Pentium D dirt cheap as a CPU upgrade as it was dual core. I need to update the BIOS to A11 or it just boots to an "incompatible processor".

Simply downloading the bios update .exe file and running it in Windows 7 results in an error occurring "trying to configure Windows to allow BIOS flashing". I've seen elsewhere that this can be fixed by deleting a certain registry key. However, I do not have this registry key, thus I can't delete it.

I've tried running the file as an administrator, ran it in compatibility modes in every Windows edition between 95 and XP SP3 with no luck either. I can't install another OS, for reasons which will take too long to explain on here, so I need to flash the BIOS through Windows or at the boot.

Please help! Thanks in advance :)

Ok thanks, I have Rufus, what settings do I need to enter to make the exe file bootable?

Hi, you can't update the BIOS in the GX620 from Windows 7 in my experience - and the GX520 is virtually the same motherboard. I reverted to XP to upgrade the BIOS but if you don't want to then you can do it from DOS - so thats a floppy or a USB stick.

Something like this to make bootable USB:  http://rufus.akeo.ie/

HP offers a utility for making a flash drive DOS-bootable. I used it on a 16gb Corsair and it's been very handy for updating old Dell BIOSes.

Are you running it from DOS or Windows?

But using the A11GX620.exe file in the utility results in a error saying "There are no valid DOS system files at the specified location". Am I missing files?

I've tried to format the USB drive and create a bootable DOS drive from it using both Rufus and the HP format Utility in Windows 7 but, in both circumstances, I've encountered an error that there are no valid DOS system files.

The only way I can flash the BIOS is through DOS, Windows 7 doesn't work with these files.

The only file I have is the A11GX620.exe application.
