Welcome to the forums

If you were to start a poll, I think you'd find the vast majority of home users actually like/use mice with those additional buttons... specifically for what you described (and in games etc).

I use a Logitech MX518 and G5 on my gaming PC's, and a Logitech MediaPlay with my laptop - all of which have similar buttons, and I've never had the problems you describe?

Nor has anyone else that I know of... which would suggest it's the way you're holding the mouse which is to blame?

Your thumb should actually rest below the buttons?

If there's no option in the 'Mouse' properties to disable them, then you'll either have to adjust the way you hold it, or buy yourself a mouse which doesn't have those buttons

But have you downloaded/installed the mouse drivers, because the Logitech software allows you to reconfigure the individual buttons, and one of the options offered is 'Do Nothing' - which would obviously disable the buttons.

I'd expect Dell's drivers to offer a similar option?

I'd have linked to the specific drivers, but you've neither mentioned what model mouse it is, nor what system you're using it with?

Here are the drivers for their Premium Optical Mouse anyway.

I have no idea what YOUR thumb looks like, but I have a normal size hand (I wear L to XL size gloves) and the buttons on the left side are EXACTLY WHERE my thumb rests.  The only way to avoid it is to curl the thumb uncomfortably underneath the palm of my hand.  I can certainly keep my thumb below the side buttons, AFTER HAVING SURGERY TO CUT MY THUMB IN HALF DOWN THE LENGTH OF THE NAIL!  I still contend that these buttons are the useless addition of some inept hardware designer.  Please give us additions that have viable functions, not just bells and whistles that slow down performance and increase price!

I will post the mouse model number and serial number tomorrow after I gather the information at work.  There is currently nothing in the control panel to disable the buttons, and the buttons are not even mentioned.  The only changeable features are reversing the left and right mouse buttons and the speed of the scrolling roller.

I would love to see a picture of how someone is supposed to have the thumb "Below the buttons", I don't think it's humanely possible for anyone older than 11.

Let's start a poll.  My vote is that the browser control buttons on the side of a mouse are the most useless addition since the mouse concept was arrived at by programmers @ Apple Computer.  Let's hear from the people, Vote Here!

Install the Dell Mouse Suite, then you can program the thumb buttons to something else.

http://ftp.us.dell.com/input/R152683.EXE

Or search for "dell premium mouse" or R152683 at Dell.

For my other logitech mice, I usually program the thumb buttons to Shift and Ctrl, so that I can singlehand click and select multiple files in Windows explorer.

Unfortunately, Dell Mouse Suite does not let you program those buttons to Shift or Ctrl by themselves, it has to be coupled with another button.  And this dell mouse is not compatible with Logitech's Setpoint mouse software, I've tried.

So it's unlikely UberOptions will work - since it was programmed specifically for Logitech's SetPoint application?

It might be worth trying though - just to confirm it one way or the other?

Dpeltonaz, I am with you, we have the Dell Premium Mouse at work and I have it at home. Most of us at work hate the buttons on the left side and have asked for the mouse to be changed but we are still waiting.  I cannot hold the mouse without accidentally touching the side buttons from time to time, which is infuriating when it changes the page you are working on. I don't what to re-assign the buttons, I want be disable them. Can anyone help?  Apart from the buttons on the side the mouse is fine, it's comfortable, in fact I have been very pleased with my whole Dell system, apart from the irritating mouse problem. I guess it will just mean buying a new mouse in the end.

Dpeltonaz

I have posted this 20/10/09 supporting your views on the design of Dell's mouse. This is my first attempt at posting anything so I have done everthing properly. I hope Dell take notice of your comments when designing there next mouse or making it clear when ordering a new system which one will be supplied.

Agghghh!  Yes, this is seriously annoying.  The suggestion of "rest your thumb below the buttons" is ludicrous, as there is no room for such a placement (unless you have microfingers).  With the bottom of my thumb touching my mouse pad, the top of my thumb very easily presses the buttons, causing me to lose entire posts, which, as someone mentioned, is extremely frustrating.  I'm going to try some alternate drivers and see what comes up.

I agree.  Annoying problem.  Who's the jerk who thinks I'm holding my thumb in the wrong spot?  Anyway, here's how I fixed it:  Download new Dell Mouse Suite (or some name like that).  Here's the link:

http://ftp.us.dell.com/input/R152683.EXE

Follow steps for installation and restarting your computer.  Don't open it thru your control panel, but rather thru your programs in the start menu, or by right-clicking on the icon in your toolbar on the right side of the bottom of your screen.  When you're shown the picture of the mouse, program buttons # 4 and 5 as follows (They are default set to the annoying forward and back functions):  Keystroke assignment.  Then when it asks what key to assign, select "none".  Don't make the mistake of directly assigning "None" instead of "Keystroke assignment".  I learned the hard way that doesn't work.

Good Luck.

Lol at the first guy. Practically everyone find this an annoying addition. Although I'd be surprised if he's really questions 'everyone he knows.'

Bad design, annoying.
