Dimension 2300 CPU Upgrade
Hi There!
I would like to upgrade my Dell Dimension 2300's CPU That is currently running on Intel Pentium 4 1.8 GHz 256K cache 400 MHz FSB, Chipset - Intel 845GL , 160 Gb Hard Drive, Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 256 MB PCI 3D Video Graphic Card, Memory 133MHz-1GB SDRAM
Can any one tell me if there is any utility tool available to figure out my CPU upgrade options based on the chipset or system board type.
Thanks

Hi, sukhdeep71 :
It is not going to be easy to find a cost-effective CPU upgrade for your system. Any 400 MHz FSB P4 Socket 478 processor should work. A 2.4GHz will give you a decent boost for maybe $25. Anything more than that is not worth the money, IMHO.

You can search in ebay for 400 MHz FSB under socket 478 CPUs. Use search in title and description. Saw 2.6 and 2.8 Pentiums. Saw 2.4 Celerons for $10 shipped. You will need to purchase some heat sink compound as well.

Hi! Thanks for replying to my query. I do agree with you regarding cost effectivness. I have selected the following 400 MHz FSB P4 Socket 478 CPUs from Intel website but it doesn't help you find the right one that is suitalbe for Intel chipset 845GL. I believe one of these(1.8GHz) is already on my motherboard that I want to upgrade. Can some tell me which of these CPUs are suitable for my upgrade with right Spec Code.
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.00 GHz, 256K Cache, 400 MHz FSB
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 1.80 GHz, 256K Cache, 400 MHz FSB
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.40 GHz, 512K Cache, 400 MHz FSB
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.50 GHz, 512K Cache, 400 MHz FSB
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.60 GHz, 512K Cache, 400 MHz FSB

All of those will work. Just go find the cheapest one you can.
It would NOT be worth the effort to upgrade to a faster Celeron. Definitely go for a P4 with a full 512k cache. I recently upgraded a 1.8GHz Celly in a Dim 2350 to a P4 2.0GHz and the difference was amazing.

Hi thanks again. I would replace a P4 with a faster P4 only. But Intel has bunch (6-8) of CPUs of Pentium P4 512K cache 400FSB type under each of the speed category with different SPEC CODE. May I know how significant or important are the SPEC CODES while selecting a CPU for a particular chipset. As I have mentioned before that my mother board's chipset is Intel Chipset 845GL.

Here you go, Pentium 4, 2.4GHz for $21. Comes with a 30-day warranty if it doesn't work.

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS Version A02 installed, when updated support for newer Pentium 4 and Celeron CPU's was added.
