Dell keyboard transposed key values
Hi
My keyboard was fine until Dell fitted a new motherboard for an unrelated problem. Now, some key values are transposed. For instance
@ = "
" = @
# = \
Is this a keyboard mapping problem? If so, how do I change this (I have Vista)
Or do I have to mess around with new drivers etc?
Or is the keyboard as useless as the original motherboard?
Will this have to go back to Dell, and cost me more time?

You have to change your keyboard regional settings to where you live.
Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Keyboards and Languages tab -> Change Keyboard button -> Click the region listed and then click add button -> English (united states) for us -> US
Then click ok and then select the old keyboard layout and select remove.

EDIT: Ooops - Sorry Tyger.
....that particular reversal looks like English US vs. English UK - had a recent post in XP with the same switch, though that was due to an OS reinstall.

I have a similar problem except that the primary(admin) user acct is fine. It's when I sign on as other user, the keyboard switches to US transposing "(typed as @) and @(typed as")even though when I go into settings, language and region it shows uk and english(uk) qwerty as default with us english pack as an installed item but not set as default. I've tried removing the us english pack alternative as i thought that may be causing the problem BUT the **** thing keeps coming back. I have noticed when perusing the registry that there are 2 different codes for keyboard preload depending on the user 00000809 for default and 00000409 for st******.
Any suggestions as to how I can get this puter to acknowledge that the other user is english and in the uk typing on a qwerty keyboard would be appreciated.

Next time, start a new thread rather than posting in one that's 7 years old. Always include the PC model and version of Windows too. And please watch your language so forum doesn't have to censor your posts. :emotion-5:
The user's profile is probably corrupted. So it's probably going to be easier to create a new user account with UK English, and allow the new user to take possession of the files owned by the other account. When all the files are owned by the new user, you can delete the old one.

My apologies for trying to keep the same issue(despite it being 7 years old it seems nothing has changed) in one place making it easier to try to find a solution for others. You haven't said start a new thread to reply now to your reply so here goes.
Watch what language? Would that be English or American as that's the problem I'm having :emotion-5:.
Ok, you are not being very clear. Are you saying create a new Admin (primary user )account which to all intents and purposes is doing what it should(ie has correct region and langauge and keyboard layout) or are you saying create another "other user" account. If it's the latter, I have already done that(twice) and get exactly the same result.

But hardware and software have changed significantly since 2008, so fixes that worked back in ancient times won't be suitable now. And all those asterisks (*) in your first post in this thread say the forum's censor software wasn't happy about some things you said. And intentionally using * to replace objectionable text is a violation of the forum's terms of use.
Log into the account with the problem and go to Settings -> Accounts -> Sync your Settings. Then, under Individual sync Settings, set Language Preferences to Off.
See if that helps...

The "other user" accounts that I have set up are all local and have sync set to off. So that wouldn't appear to be the problem.

What you are asking for is not supported.
The only way to change the language is to reinstall with that localized version of windows. So if its German and you want UK or its Spanish and you want English or Korean you need the Windows Disk in that language or you MUST USE Ultimate or Enterprise version of windows.
Only windows ultimate/enterprize can change languages and do language packs.
All other Versions including Starter and Home and PRO cannot change.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/972813
Windows 7 language packs are available for computers that are running Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise ONLY. The Windows 7 language packs can be installed only from the Optional Updates section in Windows Update. However, these language packs are not available on the Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server or through the Microsoft Download Center.

Couldn't understand what speedstep was getting at so decided to have another stab at sussing it myself. and have succeeded.
Removed 2 "other user" accounts leaving the primary admin acct holder as the only user (this I knew to be working correctly) after a bit of searching , I went settings> time and language>region and language> additional date, time and regional settings. This brings up control panel>clock langauge and region. Click on add a language>advanced settings>(under override for windows display language)"apply language settings to welcome screen, system accounts and new user accounts". This brings up a window titled "Region". On the Admin tab and "welcome screen and new user accounts" click "copy settings". New window titled "welcome screen and new user accounts settings" appears. This is where I saw that the current user settings showed English UK but the welcome screen and new user accounts showed the troublesome US. I ticked the 2 boxes at the bottom (copy your current settings to....) and voila, i now have all users able to type @ and get @..... not ".

Glad you got it sorted, but they sure didn't make it easy for you...
