Connecting digital camera/Windows 98

I've seen lots of prior questions about connecting cameras -- here's mine.

I'm trying to download pictures from Olympus D-510 to my Dimension XPS T450 with Windows 98SE with USB Support.

I've followed the directions that came with the camera -- several times -- uninstalling and re-installing its Camedia software. According to the camera's directions, if the connection is correct, a flashing green light will appear (on the camera). Well, the flashing green light does appear BRIEFLY, then goes off and I get this error message on the computer screen:

"Cannot connect to the camera. Please confirm or try the following:

1. The camera is plugged in and the power is on.
(I can confirm this much!!)

2. Change port setting. (Not sure how to do this, but when I look at my Device Manager settings, the port setting shows "AUTO", sounds like it would find the right one.)

3. Lower communication speed. (Again, not sure how to do this, but again the Device Manager setting shows speed as "AUTO".)

4. Camera's mode dial is set to outer connection mode.
(I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS MEANS AND CANNOT FIND ANYTHING ABOUT 'Connection Mode' IN THE CAMERA'S MANUAL.) "

I have read some prior posts and can say I've already checked the batteries (even changed them just in case).

Also, according to the Camedia software, Camedia's CD contains the necessary USB Driver, so one of the times I installed the software, the USB driver should have also been installed -- even though I thought Win98SE with USB Support already included the USB driver (could easily be wrong about this).

Any clues from anyone out there? I'm afraid my new digital camera is useless so far!!

By the way, my instructions said to install the software first, then attach the camera to the USB port. One Delltalk answer I read said the opposite. I'm not sure, but I think I've tried it both ways, and still get the error message.
