CPU upgrade Dell dimension 9200 core 2 duo 2.4Ghz

***, was wondering if someone could help me.  I know it's not supported by dell however I would like to upgrade my CPU to the max speed supported by my Dimension 9200 .. I currently have a 2.4Ghz cpu and purchased a E8500 3.16Ghz which is NOT compatible... was wondering if I could go with a 2.66 E7300, I I think the problem is with the bus speed .. the E6600 and E7300 are both 1066Mhz but the E8500 and E8600 are 1333Mhz.

Can someone confirm that the E7300 2.66/1066Mhz is compatible.....?  Thanks.

ok so just to confirm as I'm going to purchase the CPU .. I can switch a core 2 duo for a core 2 quad... as long as I get a Q6700 2.66GHz ... correct? for a Dimension 9200 ... Thanks.

Yes, the XPS 410/9200 will take up to Q6700,1066 FSB processors.

The maximim Core 2 Duo for the Dim 9200/XPS 410 is the E6700. The maximum Core 2 Quad is the Q6700. None of the E8XXX or E7XXX processors are compatible because of the motherboards voltage and BIOS.

cool didn't realize I could go with a core 2 quad.. so my fastest option would be a Q6700?  As far as you know I should just be able to pop it in correct? No need to change jumpers etc.. I already ensured I'm running the latest BIOS... Please confirm...

Thanks for the help!

There no jumpers to change, just remove and reinstall the new processor, but you would need to clean the heatsink and reapply the thermal compound.

The directions for replacing the processor are HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

A manual giving the procedures for cleaning and reapplying the thermal compound, can be found HERE. <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

You need a small tube of thermal compound, this can be purchased from any computer store.

Good luck with the upgrade, I would like to upgrade to a Quad processor, but unfortunately my 530 motherboard is not compatible.

awesome thanks. seems to be a lot of mis-information on the net about this.. people going with the E8500/E8500 (3.1/3.3Ghz CPUs) which def. don't work .. trust me ... I paid the 15% restocking fee...  well fingers croessed on the Q6700 just ordered it today... Will let ya know....

You guys rock! Just applying new thermal compound now.... the new Quad core CPU at 2.66 gives me a 5.9 rating in Vista... I feel special!

Thanks again for the CORRECT info....!

Peace.

Hey men I was hoping you could help me. I also have a Dimension 9200, but with a Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 at 2.66 Ghz and I am considering the possibility of upgrading to the Q6700 the same you did. So I just wanted to know if you think it really worths the pain or not. I mean is it faster (although I realize you had one at 2.4 and maybe you could tell me). I also wanna know exactly what you did. I mean did you simply put it there or did you do anything else whatsoever. Did you use the thermal compund or what? Please respond you are the only one in the net that has been in the same situation (almost). THANK YOU!

I upgraded from a E6300 to Q6600, and barely noticed any difference. And yea you have to add on thermal compound to keep the cpu cooled.

Sounds like a great result for the OP though I reckon it would be difficult to tell the difference between the Duos and Quads, i.e. 2.4 GHz E6600 / 2.66ghz E6700 and 2.4ghz Q6600 / 2.66ghz Q6700, except under extreme conditions. So changing from an E6600 to a Q6700 is unlikley to be value for money.

To answer a couple of recent posts, the fastest the 9200 can take is the 2.66ghz E6700 Duo and Q6700 Quad (NOT the E6750 because that is 1333mhz FSB) and the fastest the E520 can take is the E6700 (again not the E6750 and not the Quads).

It is said above that the 1066mhz FSB E7300 will not run in a 9200 and I have no reason to doubt that though there would be little point because the E7XXXs have a smaller cache than the E6XXXs.

Well...seeing as I have an E520 lying around that I was planning to upgrade with either an E6600 or Q6600 - it should take an E6700 or a Q6700 as it has the 965 chipset...right?

Anyone done this?

Thx.

I've got a dimension 9200 core 2 duo with x2 E6420 2.13Ghz memory,  Geforce 7900 GS 512 (I think could be 256mb), ,  2GB RAM running Vista (sadly) home pemium 32 bit.

I have a copy of Oblivion that won't play.. I suspect due to memory, GTA 4 which is almost unplayable graphically and might buy Empire TW next year when they have released a dozen patches to finish the game (why do companies release unfinished games?). I would love to play Assassins Creed and Farcry 2 as well.

I am looking into getting quad core, but found out here that there is little difference between Core 2 duo and Quad. So what should I look to upgrade. Could it be memory that is letting me down, or the graphics card. My windows rating is 5.9 at the moment. From what I understand, that is pretty good so can't understand where I am falling down. Should I just give up and buy a PS3? Thanks in advance.

I have a Dell E520 running happily with a Q6600 and 8 Gb RAM.  I'm running 64 bit Windows 7 RTM:
