How to force OME to update the Patches needed by clients

So we're trying to use OME to monitor our hardware and see what they are out of date on as far as BIOS, Firmware, Drivers, etc.  Our problem, and many people's problem from what I've read so far, is how to get OME to update it's list after patches are applied.

I just installed a patch for a SAS device which OME said was successful.  I then restarted all the DSM services on the client and did a new inventory /status from within OME, and it was still reflecting the package was out of date.  I then remoted into the client to check and found that in OMSA the new version was listed so it did install fine.

I then installed a Network card patch which OME said failed although the OME log said it worked with code 2 because it needed to reboot.  After the reboot OME still had the old version but OMSA now had the new version so it did work.

If I have to remote into each machine every time (or run OMSA for each machine) to see it patches worked that kind of defeats the point of using OME since I have to go touch every machine manually.

Does anyone have a guaranteed way of getting OME to update it's information?

Thanks.

Hi,

Can you please tell which version of OME is being used and also OMSA version on target ?

One more thing to check, after successful updates does inventory information for particular device reflects correctly in device details ?

Thanks

What is OMSA version that you have on these servers?

OME 2.0.1

OMSA 7.4.0

I was able to finally get some of them to update after closing out of OME and going back into it but don't yet know if it was a combination of all the other stuff and then going out of OME or what.  Just trying find out a 100% for sure way of getting this to show the correct versions of things in OME.

Hmm.  We jsut installed OMSA on all our server within the last month or so and 7.4 was the current version at the time.  *sigh*.

Hmm, just checked and 7.4.0 is still the most recent version for anything other than 13g machines according to this site:

http://www.dell.com/support/contents/us/en/19/article/Product-Support/Self-support-Knowledgebase/enterprise-resource-center/Enterprise-Tools/OMSA

We are using 410, 610, and 620 servers.

UPDATE: Just found 7.4.1 mentioned at this site.  Wish Dell woudl keep all their *** updated.

I found the OMSA Update task and tried that but got an error:

Error message:(ID-2)The system cannot find the file specified.

Do I extract the downloaded OMSA file and then just point the task at the MSI file inside it:

C:\OpenManage\windows\SystemsManagementx64\sysmgmtx64.msi

I can try the install task but didn't know if it would have a problem since it's already there.

yes, so if you just go to remote tasks, there is an OMSA deploy task and you can push 7.4.1 using this task.  It will update.

Thanks for info,

OMSA 7.4.0 has certain issues related to inventory collection module, which got patched in later releases.

I would suggest you to patch OMSA on target.

So is there a way to push 7.4.1 to my servers from OME or do I have to remote into each one and uninstall the old one and install the new one by hand?  Or can I just install over the top?  Not sure on the best way to do that.

Now I'm getting this error:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PackageCode  1
PackageFileName  C:\Users\DA-MBO~1\AppData\Local\Temp\s6ak\SysMgmt.msi
PackageLog  There was an installation error. This may be due to attempting an upgrade or downgrade that the product does not allow.
This is not a supported server. Dell OpenManage Systems Management Software (64-Bit) software can only be installed on supported servers.
PackageReleaseId  Not Available
PackageState  complete
PackageStatus  5
TotalStatus  Update Package failed during execution.
TotalStatusMessage  Software update complete.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The server is running 2008 R2 64-bit so I don't know why it's complaining.  The current version installed on the server says:

Dell OpenManage Systems Management Software (64-Bit) Version 7.4.0

So it's definitely 64 bit.  *sigh*

Hi,

There is a whitepaper for OMSA deployment and upgrade from OME, here is the link for that -

en.community.dell.com/techcenter/extras/m/white_papers/20069180

For above error message, that OMSA version may not be supported on the server you are trying.

Thanks

Which is the OMSA version which you are trying to install? OMSA 8 versions had a lot of drop on server side. If it is OMSA 8.0, it is better to look at the support site. The inventory collector giving wrong data was fixed in a patch release for OMSA 7.4 which will definitely be supported on the platform where 7.4 is installed. Are you trying to install the patch?

I got it figured out.  I was assuming that 7.4.1 was an upgrade from 7.4.0 which it is not.  Apparently 7.4.1 is only for specific versions.  I then stumbled on 7.4.0.2 which I got installed and it worked fine.  Pretty lame numbering scheme if you ask me.
