Problem extending a storage spaces virtual disk

Question

I'm working with Windows 2016 server with 4 x 4TB disks. I want to test adding disks to a storage pool and virtual disk and extending a volume. I've created a pool with 3 disks, a virtual disk at 12TB (simple, fixed) and a volume at 12TB. Everything works as expected. Then I added the 4th disk to the pool and it shows a 16TB size with 12TB used. When I try to extend the virtual disk, it shows a max size of 12TB, even though the pool shows 16TB in the pool. Shouldn't I be able to extend the virtual disk? I've tried with powershell too. Even trying to set a new size at 1GB bigger, it errors out saying not enough space available in the pool. It does work with thin virtual disks, but I'd rather use fixed disks. I have seen youtube videos of folks extending fixed virtual disks. Anyone able to see where I'm going wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Jacob,

I found this helpful video on the subject. It might help a bit. When you go to expand, does it show if the free space is there or not? I didn't see that part mentioned in your post and that's where I'd want to start. I'm not a Storage Spaces expert by any means, but I'm fairly sure that if it doesn't at least acknowledge the free space, you won't be able to extend.
