17 R4, keyboard typing on its own

Hello,

Today I started up my Alienware 17 R4 after about 1 month of not being used. Laptop has been stored in a dry room in my house. Suddenly I notice that my keyboard is typing the number 4 on its own or moving the cursor on it own to the left (presume the problem might be in the 4 key of the keypad then). It does not occur when I need to type my password to enter windows itself, only when already in windows. Can anyone help?

Kind regards,

Frédéric

I4'm leaving all the 4's4 in as an example to Dell on how it affects my work. 44 I believe this is a result of the recent update my laptop performed4. Plea4se resolve this annoying problem4! Thank4 you!

Hi,

Please check if you have any pending Windows updates. If you do, install them, restart the system and confirm if the issue still occurs.

Indeed, I recall it getting an update and afterwards it didn't work anymore. All updates have been done, restart has been done and still the problem exists.

Conducted all windows and Alienware updates. Problem also remains.

Latest updates were "feature update" version 1803 and "quality update" (security update for adobe flash player v.1803)

I do not have an external keyboard connected that could be ghosting my keyboard.

I’ve been having the same problem, with the same laptop. I’ve noticed the 4 is entered through the keypad, and doesn’t enter when number lock is off, but when number lock is off is when the cursor will move to the left.

Hi,

Please try uninstalling the Tobii Eye Tracking software and let us know if that fixes the issue. Our engineering team is working on a solution to this problem.

I have the Alienware 17 R4 and the exact same problem is happening to me when I have Tobi eye tracking on.  The windows "type here to search" box just keeps typing "44444444...." and it's very hard to navigate to Tobi eye tracking to turn it off.  I have done all Alienware updates identified in the "SupportAssist" app.

Please add me to the list to get an email when this problem is fixed.

I also have done all the windows updates too and it's still happening.

Windows version:  Windows 10, version 1803

I went to uninstall tobii as recommended, and noticed there was a tobii eye tracker update. I don't know when it became available but I went ahead and updated it. Afterwards, so far for now, I am no longer having the inconvenient "4's" and left-moving cursor. Good luck to the others, hopefully the same thing works for you, and hopefully the problem doesn't return.

  1. Disable Tobii Eye tracker service on msconfig/services
  2. Uninstall Tobii Eye Tracker in Apps & Features
  3. Delete Tobii folder under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node
  4. Re-install Tobii Eye tracker from   and get version 2.13.3 or higher
  5. Enable the Tobii Eye Tracker service on msconfig/services

Eric, Great find it worked!! For those for you that have a hard time because of the keyboard making it impossible to get to Tobii form the start button just click the show hidden icons and open it form there. You will have to manually update it from settings. Eddie

What I did when it happened to me I change HID keyboard into HID-Compliant. Coz HID keyboard keeps reinstalling when I click the changes on the top. So, to avoid it from coming back I made HID Keyboard to HID compliant.
-it works to those who have problem in the device manager(inner problem).

I was able to fix the same issue without actually removing Tobii. I just disabled all of its features in the Tobbi app. Now to work out why face recognition can't find my camera. I think it will also be related to Tobii. Chris
