17 R3, RTX 3070, AGA issue

I have an Alienware 17 R3, Nvidia RTX 3070 and AGA (Alienware Graphics Amplifier). I received my 3070 yesterday and cannot get it to work with my computer and/or monitors hooked up to it. I have the most recent 457.09 Game ready driver from Nvidia and the latest updates for Win10 Home.

The card is recognized in Device manager but has a warning triangle in front of the icon. Device manager states: This device is not working properly because Windows cannot locate the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API.

Is there anyone that knows the solution to this? Already thanks for your time.

Check the AGA (Alienware Graphic Amplifier) FAQ, "Supported video cards" =

* The soon to be EOL (end of life) November 2014 released AGA is not going to be validated by Dell with the RTX 3xxx video cards

There is at present no solution - the AGA does not support the 3000 series nVidia GPUs.

Should have been day one ready, but its been a little over a month already with no support. Pretty disappointed about it

Same thing happened to me. Exactly what you explained to the dot. I just bought a new AGA, 3070, external monitor and hdmi cable for nothing... I hope they update this or i’ll just have to sell and return everything.

Same here, really disappointing. I was told by Alienware directly that it should work.

Give it time, there are some moving parts to this problem that have yet to be solved.  I believe this problem will go away once mobile 3000 series GPU drivers are available.

I have a work around.

I am running an ASUS TUF RTX 3090 in the AGA right now.

All the cards are compatible with the correct drivers but you have to bypass the microchip in the AGA proprietary graphics cable.

The work around is to boot your Alienware laptop with the AGA (containing the RTX 3000 series graphics card) connected the little white light on the AGA graphics cable will come on.

While the  laptop is booting up, pull the power cord (not the AGA graphics cable) on the AGA and then reconnect immediately (before you laptop has finished booting up).

You will notice the led on the AGA graphics cable remains off, this indicates the chip in the cable is being bypassed. Your AGA with your new GPU should work i.e the GPU driver should install properly no code 31.

Clearly this is not a perfect work around, but it does work.

Hope this helps.

Nope, didn't work. Thanks for sharing what you think worked for you though. I personally think your 3070 card is compatible with the AGA because it's a simplified non overclocked version.

Dell has a disclaimer for their AGA which states the following: Certain video manufacturers may modify their video card VBIOS causing incompatibility with the graphics amplifier (Superclock, Overclock

Hi, can you confirm if your GPU is a founders edition and not an overclocked GPU?

I am also having the same issue with my 15 R3 the error code 31.

They should work on this. It's a shame such a company would ghost their Gaming community customers which by the way AW gaming products are not cheap. They should still support the AGA with drivers. Optimize BIOS and Drivers.

Dell is not willing to accept this as a Market or High Impact on their sales. AW was an awesome company before they got bought by Dell.

No it will work. I have a MSI 3070 SUPRIM working in mine. Cant close the lid though.

My method is to pull the cable first then power. Then plug cable back in after a few seconds. Reinsert power cord.

A this point the light should not come back on. If it does repeat the process. Next go to device manager and search for new hardware. It will be found and after a few seconds windows will update it.

At this point if you open properties on the 3070 it should say its working but needs a restart. Disable the 3070 and then reenable it. Properties should now say it is working properly.

If you need to restart it is possible to do the above method at the Alienware load logo but you have to have really good timing.

Do you have to unplug every time you start up the pc or only the initial time for it to set up and be recognized?

It has to be done every time.

My RTX is a Aorus 3070 Overclocked I have it running with the default bios on Overclock not on Default stock. the downside I have to reboot my laptop and let it boot with the AGA connected then I have to unplug it as windows boots and just before the windows logon screen appears, I connect it back again. one thing you can do is after you unplug the AGA form its power and windows is loading look at the back of the AGA special connector on the back of the Laptop, this should not stay lit. Sometimes it will still works after you log on and power back the AGA but I've seen this could cause the windows explorer to glitch once you hit the windows logo to open programs.

I have disable my Intel dedicated GPU through device manager.

I would  add pictures for you to see, but  dell sites wont allow me to upload pictures.
