Alienware aurora r4 5.1 surround sound

Hello.

i just got a 5.1 surround sound setup for my pc and nothing in the realtek hd audio manager works it just says only supports stereo format so how am i meant to set my speakers up?

i have no equalizers or anything it seems kind of stupid to have a built in sound card that works up to 7.1 surround but then give u no control over it at all or am i missing something?

Thanks

1. The digital theater works :)  The front speakers , center and sub have always moved you since I am only in a 6x6 room but when the surround sound kicks in you feel it.

2. I went to Netflix and cant find a movie that has Dolby or THX or anything. They seem to work on my home system but not the PC.

3. YouTube and music don't use the rear speakers either

1. Excellent.

2. Strange. Newer movie should. Maybe the Windows Netflix App doesn't support it or it's just a setting.

3. Right.

Thanks Tesla1856 for all the help. Although I cant get the surround sound to work with all sites it does in fact work and works well so I would say this case is solved. :) I will look at other settings to see if I can get like Netflix to work and what not. Thanks again :)

1. You are welcome. We can keep working on it if you want. I think we are filling this thread with good info, don't you ?

2. As you have learned, it depends on the "source file" ... how many channels of sound it was encoded with. I think now that you have experienced TRUE 5.1, you prefer it (when possible) to just all the speakers playing some noise.

3. Agreed, we proved it DOES WORK and that was my main objective to helping you. No need for you to go buy a new speaker system or sound-card.

4. So, it works, but you still have 2 separate lingering issues.

a. Netflix only plays in stereo.

I suggest you follow-up with Netflix on this. Maybe there is a forum. I don't currently have an Account, but I'm curious what App you are using and if you check it's audio options. Maybe even "preferred audio" options in your online account.

b. Stereo audio only plays in 2-speakers (by design and not broken, but still an issue you have).

When you are using YouTube or playing stereo MP3s, a workaround might be to enable the Virtual Surround enhancement called "Speaker Fill".

I think this might be the work-around you are looking for. All speakers should play some kind of sound ( sometimes referred to as "All Speaker Stereo"). Of course, it's just a mixture of sounds from the available 2 stereo channels ... not discretely individual channels like encoded (or recorded in) true 5.1 surround sound files.

For sure all good info and I know there must be others with the same issues.

Checking the speaker filler box worked. It for sure is nothing like true 5.1 but it does spread the music out a little. But the front speakers over power the rear so much that it don't make enough of a difference to worry about. I guess I could adjust the volume levels to just did not think about it.

You said ( curious what App you are using and if you check it's audio options ) Not sure what you mean ?

Like as in windows media player or win amp along those lines ?

I looked in Netflix account but did not see any settings for audio. But I may look at that some more. Normally we don't watch Netflix on the pc since the tv is much bigger then my monitor and the recliner is in front of it lol But still would be interesting to see what I can find out.

Wow I just turned the volume down on every thing but the rear and man what a garbled mess it is coming out of them. Think I will uncheck the speaker fill. Sounds better with just the front , center and sub.

Sounds like you know what you are doing. Yeah, "garbled mess" is a good description of "All Speaker Stereo". Since you know and appreciate the difference between that, stereo, and true 5.1 surround sound, you are officially an audiophile. [:)]

Like you ... if source is 2-channel stereo, I usually prefer to listen that way (well, maybe with Sub also). However, when that's all you got to work with ... there are some "ok" virtual surround sound listening modes that are good for movies and what-not in a home theater setting. But I usually use a real Amp/AVR with DSP to get modes like Dolby PLII-x (Movie and Music) or NEO6.

This is what you see when I wake-up my Living-Room's (media and gaming) computer. This wallpaper pic is still pretty accurate except XBMC is Kodi now, and old JBLs (and Infinity sub) were replaced a while back with a full set of Polk Audio full-sized matched separates ... Series-II Monitors with a 505 sub-woofer ... in 6.1 config.

All audio is either Multi-Channel PCM or Digital Bitstream, all via HDMI cables. Onkyo 607 Amp is "in the middle" as the system controller.

1. Good

2. Right. Yeah, some people just want some kind of sound coming from each speaker. They really don't care what it is exactly. I get the feeling you aren't one of those people any more  ... if you ever were. Actually, I doubt you were or you won't have posted your original question, or worked this hard to get things setup properly.

Like I said, I don't have a Netflix account (I have Amazon Prime instead) but this says you can use a browser or the free Windows Store App. I get the impression that if you want to use Microsoft browser, that Edge is better, but App is the most full-featured. Makes sense to me.

And if you read the blog comments, one person says:

I can confirm the app on Windows 10 gets u 5.1 audio and true 1080p. Browser gets 1080p but no 5.1.

I down loaded the app for Netflix and video is good but yeah no 5.1 even though it says it is. You know we used to use our PS3 to watch Netflix on the TV The PS3 is hooked to our Sony surround sound system and every time we watch a movie on Netflix we would choose 5.1 and we could hardly hear the movie would have to turn the volume way up. So most of the time we would choose stereo. Now we have a PS4 hooked to same system and it plays 5.1 just fine. Not sure if it is something different they have done to the system or maybe it is the port I have it plugged in to. I know much less about that TV stuff then I do computers lol

Well, it was worth a try. However, between your various rooms and setups ... doesn't sound like it's a big problem in the grand scheme of things.

At least you know your computer and speakers are setup properly now, and either work as intended, or you have work-arounds for most of the surround-sound and audio issues you previously had with your Aurora-R4.

With what I have learned from you in this thread I went and checked my home system out and had some things setup wrong in it. So now it is working like it should be ( I always thought it was ) I found my self having to turn the system down last night while the wife and I was watching tv lol
