Why Windows Boot Manager is not in UEFI list?
Hi.
I am installing Windows 10 into Samsung EVO 850 SSD. I have no other drives installed. This SSD is complitely empty.
Computer: Alienware 18 2013. 2x GTX 880m. i7-4910MQ. 4x 4GB RAM. And at the momenta my own 250GB SSD. (On the "Fixed HDD" slot)(I removed the 1TB HDD and cache SSD as they caused other problems)
In the manual it says that in the UEFI boot menu there is Windows Boot Manager, as well as UEFI Onboard LAN IPv4 and IPv6.
Problem is, if I install Windows 10 in UEFI boot, (settings below) I can not boot from the SSD. I can seet it in Main in BIOS, but not in Boot. (It will be installed in GPT format)
The boot settings:
Windows 8 fast boot: enabled,
usb hotkey: disabled,
Secure boot: enabled,
Load Legacy options rom: disabled,
Boot list option: UEFI,
Secure boot mode: Standard,
Under the Advanced window 'SATA Operation is set to 'AHCI'.
If I boot in Legacy, the installer gets stuck in the 'Where do you want to install Windows" screen as it says "Windows cannot be installed on this disk. Hardware may not support..." (Attachment picture).
I have used diskpart to clean the SSD before trying to install.
I can't see the Windows Boot Manager if I am in the UEFI. It has to be the SSD, right? Why???

Hi ,
If you don't have the latest Bios version, you can try updating it. Also, Try disabiling secure boot.

I don't have that machine, but let's see if I can help.
First ... Windows Boot Manager will not appear until Windows has been successfully installed once in UEFI Mode.
It should be very close to this (even though this was written for PCIe/NVMe and not SATA):

Have only the fresh (or newly DiskPart/Cleaned) SSD connected for now. Only have the disk you want to install Windows to (and wish it to be bootable).
I assume you are using flash drive created with Microsoft's Windows-10 Media Creation Tool. Use F12 boot menu to get started.
If you are going for a "SecureBoot" system, then UEFI-Mode is required. Using this media should not cause a problem, but you can wait to enable SecureBoot later if it does. However, Legacy Mode is still acceptable if that's all that works. It should still boot "UEFI-like" fast, but you won't be able to fully enable SecureBoot.
You can try in either RAID (will likely end-up being a "single-disk RAID") or AHCI. If RAID-Mode, you might need F6 Drivers if SSD is missing when looking for drive to install Windows to. If it works in AHCI Mode, then I don't usually install Intel-RST inside Windows unless it's absolutely required.
You will know when it works. Changing either Legacy/UEFI and/or RAID/AHCI in BIOS after Windows is installed and working ... sometimes requires a complete Nuke-and-Pave (ie start completely over for scratch). I suggest you choose wisely now while system is being newly "built-up".

Hi.
Are you saying that if I install Windows 10 in UEFI, so in GTP format, I can also boot it in Legacy Boot mode?
Problem is that even if the instal finishes and automatically restarts in UEFI boot mode, the SSD does not appear on the UEFI boot list.
I tought it would show up as Windows boot manager...
It also wont boot in Legacy mode.
Can you tell me the specifics of the F6 driver install thig. I dont understand how it works.

i recall reading someones post, claiming he could not boot into Windows after installing it from USB Flash Drive. however, he was able to boot after installing Windows 10 from the DVD. maybe give it a shot.

1. If the SSD is new/raw (or DiskPart/Clean-ed) it is "un-Initialized". When Windows-10 creates the install partition(s) for the whole drive it will select MBR/GPT. It will likely select GPT. Let it choose. You can check it later with DiskPart (but don't mess with it).
2. If you can see the SSD at the beginning of Windows install (to select the SSD as the install drive), you should not need it.
However, it is here:

Try temporarily disabling SecureBoot.
Then, maybe force a boot of SSD with F12.
Get into Windows and do another clean shut-down.
Then, maybe in BIOS ... you will see Windows Boot Manager and can select it is Boot Priority-1.

Maybe not with current settings. But I bet it will install. Then, you just go into BIOS (leave it on Legacy) but select your SSD as Boot Priority 1. It's old-school in Legacy ... BIOS controls everything.
Just had to comment on that. Not saying you need to do that now because it sounds like you have it installed and almost booting and working in UEFI mode.

Okay.
Yes, in UEFI boot I can see and install to the SSD. It will finish and reboot.
But then nothing happens. If i leave the USB in, install starts again, if I take it out, it boots nothing. If I press F12 in boot I can see the UEFI list: Onboard LAN IPv4 and Onboard LAN IPv6.

Gave it a shot. Tried to install from DVD in Legacy, got the same error as in original post.
Tried to install from DVD in UEFI. It managed to install, but I cannot find it in boot lists and it wont boot.

In Legacy boot I cannot even install. I can see the SSD but I get the error shown in the picture under the original post above.

I can't force F12 boot because the SSD with the windows does not show up in the list.
I cannot see anything else than Onboard LAN IPv4 and IPv6.
What did you mean by "Get into Windows and do another clean shut-down". I didn't quite get that.

i don't have this model. usualy under exit tab in the bios settings.
one last question and i'm gone. when you're trying to install windows in UEFI mode, do you delete all existing partitions? if not, try to do that. then click "new". windows setup should create 4 different partitions i think.
