Programs not responding then freezes whole computer

A new problem is showing up in my Alienware 18. I just left it off for a week and now this:

Everytime I leave my laptop on for like, say 20 mins, unattended, When I resume use on the laptop/program it goes smooth and after 30 seconds, the program freezes (Not Responding) then after 5 more seconds the whole laptop freezes (Keyboard doesn't respond, although the Touchpad backlight still responds to touches, and if i'm playing Youtube the sounds is still playing). The problem only started exhibiting this behaviour this week after I left it off for a week.

The programs I use regularly crash, but it never crashes the Laptop aswell. I also noticed in msconfig that my Startup Selection keeps on selecting to Selective Setup, everytime I change to Normal Boot, after the laptop shuts down it reverts back to Selective Startup

Please help.

Hi,

Have you received any errors or blue screen crashes? You could try doing a System Restore to an earlier time since this issue started recently. If you are not sure how to do a System Restore, let us know which Windows operating system you are running with your Alienware so we can explain the process.

As per this Microsoft support article, if you select the Normal startup option, the option may change to the Selective startup option when you restart your computer.

Hello,

the problem seems to have disappeared on its own, except that when I turned on the laptop and shows the Alienware logo, the loading circle( I don't know whats it called), isn't showing, I turned off the laptop via the power button. I turned it back on then it starts loading properly again.

About errors or blue screens, there was not a single Blue Screen of Death or error codes happening. I also tried to do a System Restore but the only available option was from 2 years ago, before I even bought the laptop.

I will report back here when it happens again.

Can someone also please help me as the Laptop automatically dims Brightness and disables USB on 50% Battery. When I check the critical level and low battery level, its 5% and 25%. So I don't know what is causing this.

Hello,

Thank you for confirming this. Click here to view a thread from the Microsoft Community forum regarding the brightness and USB issues, it may be helpful.

I am still awaiting results for the USB changes from the thread you linked to me.

I am still concerned when I first boot the computer up, it shows the Alienware logo but it won't show the Circular Loading Icon. I have to press the Power Button, then turn it back up, then its gonna load properly again. I don't know what is making this happened. Even if I leave the laptop for 5 mins to let it load, it won't even do it, its stuck in the Logo screen.

Also why does my Explorer.exe freeze after being left idle for 20 minutes?

Is there a general fix or thread to help with it?

UPDATE: I checked msconfig again and I saw that half of the disabled/stopped services in the Services Tab are running again. I haven't changed anything to make them run. Before boot problems happened, I checked msconfig and I can recall most of the services were "stopped", then when the problem is starting to happen, they are all running.

  • Ok USB and monitor still powers down and dims when the battery reaches to 55%
  • The part where the Circular Loading Icon in the Alienware Logo screen not showing has been fixed.
  • Explorer.exe still freezes after 20 minutes of being idle
  • Programs don't freeze Explorer.exe anymore whenever the program freezes aswell.

Also another question: Is there any threads here to let me check if my GPUs are still working correctly. Because a week ago I was playing BF4 on Ultra settings and it was going smooth on 60FPS on everything. But now, after a week, played BF4 again on Ultra Settings, but now its struggling going to 61 FPS on just interiors, and then dropping to 31 FPS whenever smoke or something flashy appears in the game.

I also ran a Diagnostic from Dell Support on my GPUs and I got a Primary Surface Test Failed with an error code WCV07-LER. PCI Express Status and SLi test was also skipped by the diagnostics for some reason.

Hello,

To better assist you, can you please confirm the GPU and Windows operating system that you are running with your Alienware 18?

I have 2 Geforce GTX 770m in SLi Configuration and Windows 8.1( now back to Windows 8)

Unfortunately the laptop suffered from a BSOD saying BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIGURATION and SESSION3_INITIALIZATION_FAILED error, so I refreshed the PC to its factory settings. I don't know what happened to why it went to BSOD, I didn't change anything or installed anything. So right now im back to Windows 8

Thank you for confirming this. Is the system still having blue screen crashes?
